THE SESSION.
WHEN WILL IT END? When tho Prime Minister stated on Friday that 0110 more week of work might bring the session to a close his forecast was regarded by a good many people as optimistic. Now, however, tho prevailing opinion seems to be that the forecast will probably be borne out. A caucus of the liberal party wa= held on Friday nitrlit and a Cabinet meeting on the lolloping day. As an upshot it is understood that a strong cflort will ho made to complete tho working programme of tho session in the period named by tho Prime Minister. There would necessarily be some curtailment of tho legislative programme—evou in i'ls lati.st' revised version—but pruning of this kind is no new thing in tho proceedings of the New Zealand Parliament, particularly in recent years. In any case a number of members .now hold the view that thoy will bo free to go to the country at tho end of the week. Some slight colour is lf>nt to this view bv the announcement that the Hon. 1?. M'iCenzie h'l.s agw-d to drive tho first pile of tho Euntly bridge on Monday, October 23. lo uo this the Minister would havo to leave A\ etlington on Saturday, and bo could not return before Tuesday. It is hardly likoly that he would couscut to bo absent for m Ion? if the session were likely to bo still in progress. The Bills which the Govern- ■ ment is practically bound to pass beforo tho prorogation number soinctlung like I half a dozen, and of three -two at least, ! tho Land aud Income lax Bill and the I Appropriation Bill are formal in ckar- | actcr« '
