BAPTIST CONFERENCE.
} : MISSION WORK. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Napier, October 11. Tho New ZeaJand Baptist Missionary Society held its annual meeting to-day as tho seventh sederunt of the Baptist Conference. Tho new president (tho Rev. Knowes Kempton) presided. The secretary (the Rev. E. A. Kirkwood) read the annual report. Tho work in Eastern Bengal is being extended. A now church and other buildings axe being erected, Great interest is being shown by the young Indians in Biblo study. Mrs. De Carteret, who has been for years in India, has resigned owing to a breakdown in health, whilst the Rov. W. Whito lias been engaged to assist Dr. Pettit at Chandpur. A churet has been formed at Brahmabaria by the ltov. J. Tackle. The treasurer's report was presented by Mr. T. E. Toncycliffe, and showed a debit balan«> on tho year's working of ,£l9O, and a total debit balance of .£'3*9. The Auckland district contributed <£GOS, Wellington <£635, Calltcrbm-y .£320. Otogo and Southland .£sl9—a total of ,£2llO. The liev. .T. K. Archer was elected «c----retary. tho Rev. A. North organising secretary, Mr. A. Hoby treasurer, tho Rev. if. \V. Mac Donald missionary preanher, and tho Rov, Howard Elliott deputypreacher. A missionary convereazione was held in St. Paul's School Hail in tho afternoon. In tho ovoning a public missionary mooting was hold, tho church _ being crowded. Mr. J. G. Prascr (the vice-pre-sident) presided. _ Addresses were delivered by Mrs. Beckingsale, who has just returned from India, and the Rev. R. S. Gray, on mission work in connection with the Philadelphia Congress. Miss Cowlo was set apart for missionary work, the sermon preached by (ho Rev. A. it. Wilson (Wanganui). Tho Rev, R. S. Gray ga.vo a most graphic description of the Russian delegates fo the Philadelphia Congress, and of the Baptist work in Russia. No complete census is possible as to the numbc.r of Baptists in tho Tsar's Dominion, but tho moderate estimate of .Pastor IV.fior is 100,000. After a description of the various delegates rail their sufferings, -Mr. Gray appealed for help to assist Pastor Potior to build a church in St. Potc.rsburg.
