LABOUR SHORTAGE.
■ SYDNEY UNIONS ALARMED. By Teleerapli—press Association—OopyriEht (Rec. October 11, 9.35 p.m.) Sydney, October 11. The interim report of tho I'oyal Commission which has been inquiring into tho shortage of labour has caused consternation among tho trades unions. Half llio secretaries of tho various unions declare that largo numbers of their members a.ro out of work, and protest against the further importations of workers. Ihc Premier, Mr. M'Gowen, declared that last year tho present Government spent JMO.OOO on immigration, which was more than the previous Governments had expended. This year it was proposed to spend .£60,000. Iho Government intended to institute a system of nomination in certain occupations where employment can bo guaranteed without tho displacement of labour already engaged. General immigration, however, Mr. M'Gowen states, is a matter for the Federal Government. THE EMPLOYERS' VIEW. (Rec- October 12, 0.35 a.m.) Sydney, October It Contrary to the Trades Hall protost, tho president of tho Chamber of Manufacturers, declares that tho Labour Cowmission erred on tho side of prudence in the estimate of tho number of men required in the different industries dealt ■with.
