NOTES ON THE RACING. (Br Toleeraph.-fioeclal CorresoontfonU v Blenheim, October U. The Spring meeting of the Marlborough Racing Club was held on the Riverlands course to-day in beautiful weather. Tho track was in perfect order, and somo good racing was witnessed. Tho crack Auckland horseman, B. Deeley, won three races on end, alid his followers had quite a good time. As to the public, there was a good attendance, these including a large contingent of Wellington visitors. A good performance was registered by the Achilles lilly, Portland Lady, in the Maiden Hack liace. Indra (Itenuwti— Searchlight), in a Hutt stable, was made favourite, but sho jumped back when tho barrier rose, and so lost any chance which sho possessed. Invera'u, who drew No. 2 at the barrier, was quickly into his stride, and, with a furlong gone, was out by himself, with Lady in second place. Entering the straight, the race appeared to be all over, but, to tho surprise of everyone, Portland Lady came with a rattle, and, the weight telling on tho Wairarapa horse, ho stopped quickly, and the Blenheim filly, ridden by Deeley, won very comfortably. Alofa, who came fast at tho business end, was third, and Indra fourth. The winner is a big, raking filly, but is very backward, and carried no condition. Gallily broke down during the race. There was some little excitement prior to tho start of the trot, tvs Woodville got rid of her driver, and careered twice round the track. By permission of. the stewards she was then scratched. Lord Roanchild, on the limit, took charge soon after the start, and led the whole way. Tho placed horses, Terry L and Tho Bann, were the only others to finish, and they (with other starters) broke up several times. lCopane, who was recently sold out of tho Highden stables, had the master hand of Deeley "up aloft" in the Welter Hack Handicap, but, nevertheless backers preferred three other horses in preference to him. At tho start—a good one—Portland Bill led from Beacon and Rongomau, with Kopanc and Embrocation at the tail. Entering tho last quarter, ICopane ran through with Astonishment, and tho leaders were quickly done with. 11l a good finish, Kopann got the last run in, and won by a necft. Rongoman was a fair third. Negative was withdrawn from the big handicap, leaving only four runners. First Battery and St. Felix monopolised the betting, and both moved attractively in their preliminary. At the start First Battery led, but was steadied, and Bracken took charge with St. Felix in the rear. This order was maintained till thn bottom bend when St. Felix moved up. At the last furlong lie was level with Bracken, and hod the field in trouble. Ho came on full of running, and won very easily. The winner has an attractive record for tho Riverlands course, having started there three times, aud won on each occasion. Ho was recently sold to the local sportsman, Mr. ,T. O'Neill, and this is his first win for his now owner. Tho Blenheim-owned Daunton was the chief preference in the Spring Hack Handicap, with Ladrone and Ahuapai next in demand. Katua jumped back when tho barrier rose, and took no part in tho race. Daunton and Ladrone led the whole way, and the Awapmii gelding eventually won a good race by a length with Ahuapai close up. This made tho second win on tho pari of 'Sir Laddo stock during the afternoon. Glenspring, who was a hot favourite in thi/ Flying Handicap, led from tho start, and wan easily. Royal Marine became entangled at tho barrier, and lost a dozen lengths, but ho then put in a wonderful run, aud was just beaten for second money. Toanga pulled up very sore, and may not' run again at tho meeting. Tho winner, who is owned in Blenheim, was greeted with cheers throughout the race, this demonstration being renewed when ho returned to the bird-cage. There is no doubt about his galloping ability and., were he sound, lie would bo amongst tho first (lighters in Now Zealajid. Katua, who had boon left on the mark in his first race, was made a better favourite than Emma in tho concluding event. Tho field moved off in a beautiful lino, but Enuna, toon asserted herself, and led across tho bottom bend lrom Katua and Amberstono. Katua then put iu his claim, but lost' ground in negotiating tho final bend. Tho Wellington maro, who was well suited to the curve by her size, than came on, and won easily.

[Bt Gw.ncoe.l The Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting and the Marlborough Racing Club's fixture will both bo concluded to-day. Acceptances for tho 'first day's events at the Wellington Pacing Clubls Spring meeting close to-morrow night with the secretary,-Mr. A. E. Whyte. Acceptances and gonoral entries for tho Waverloy-Waitotara Racing Club's annual meeting close to-morrow night with the secretary, Mr J. W. Macfarlane. General entries for tho Auckland Racing Club's Spring mooting doso to-mor-row night. At the same time acceptances for tho City Handicap are duo. ' Truo ICnight has been scratched for tho Wainui Handicap at Trftntham, and Vico-Admiral has been withdrawn from tho Wellington Handicap at tho eame meeting. Bluo Lake, who won tie last race at Napier Park yesterday, was not among tho list of acceptors telegraphed last week. Jockeys W. Holmes and J. Pine returned from Sydney by tho Warrimoo yesterday. Tho Auckland jockey, B. Deoley, will probably bo at the head of the list of winning horsemen by tho time that tho Afarlborough Eacing Club's meeting ia finished. Lady Lucy, who for tho past eighteen months has been trained at Meinington, was back to New 7ealand hv the Warrimoo yesterday. Trainer IV Tilley camo to Wellington •to meet tho steamer, and will tako tho Now Zealand Cup candidate back lb her old .quarters at Fordell this morning. Recent fOalings at Waikanio incl'.nlo tho following Purity (dam of Masonic, True Knight, mid Puro Lass), br. i to Achilles; Strathspey (dam of leviotdale), br. f. to Achilles; Berceuse (Birkenhead Achilles; Marseillaise (dam of Massilia), br. f. to Achiellcs; Berceuse ißirkcuhca4 —Lullaby), ch f. to Achilles; Viceraiuo (Birkenhead—Eoie), br. f. to Charlemagno XI; Snowstcll (sister to Fleetfoot and Broadsword), b. c. to Martian; Mayhap, ch. c. to Vascb; Eketcruia Posseropoulo (dam of Playmate), br. f. to Vasco. Mr. Gleeson's Amyris (by Gold Reef) has also foaled a filly to Berxmiau, and Mr. P. Macmaneniin's Latona (dam of Apellon) has foaled a chestnut colt to tho same sire. W. J. Ryan, the Trcntham jookcy, was expected back by the 'Sydney Ixiat yesterday, and Trainer J W. Lowe camo into town to meet him. Kyan, however, did not arrive, and it is reported that ho has gone on to Victoria to rido Bridge in the Mclbourno Cup. Bobrikotf's pcrformanco in winning tho Park Stakes at Napier yesterday with lOst. 131b. in tho saddlo (minimum Cst. 71b.) seems to bear out tho statement' that the black champion is at present better than ever he was. In reference to a paragraph that appeared in Tuesday's issue concerning tho hurdle horse Captain, tho owner writes in correction:—"First, you class the horso as a gelding, which lie is not, and then you say lie is being given trap work ' to see if he will get sound aeain.' Beyond being troubled with thrush in tho feet (which you should know is duo to sUblo ncgloct) Captaiii has never been unsound in wind or limb, and is as sound to-day as the day he was foaled. He has been driven in a light gig for tlio past four or five months to get him into good fettle for tho approaching summer racing as 1 consider him better on hard comwes than on soft ones. Captain was only a four-year-old last season, and, as ho started in five hurdle racos, and secured two wins and two Keconds, 1 considered him too good to knock about, and, consequently, kept him at light gig work to let him acquire age. The efficacy of tho treatment can be judged by an inspection of the horse to-day.—l am, etc., Sydney Harrison,"
