DAIRY BY-PRODUCTS.
"A DELICIOUS PIECE OF SATIRE." The National Dairy- Association, and dairy companies generally, are, says the "Wairarapa Age,'' being appealed to by a Wellington gentleman, whose identity, is not far to seek, to publicly acknowledge the- efforts the Government are making on behalf of the dairy industry, and to thank them for the suggestion they have made in the Budget. Now, this is all very' well on the eve of an election; -when a Minister is seeking to thrust himself upon a dairy electorate. But, what has the Government done to deserve the thanks of tho=o engaged in the dairy industry? • It threatened certain disastrous regulations some throe years back. It has imported a few more or less useless cattle. It has sent a man Home to do work which should have been done by the High Commissioner and his staff. .. And it makes a vague suggestion in the Budget that subsidies should be offered to private individuals to utilise the by-products of the dairy.. No .definite proposal has been made in regard to these subsidies. They may, for aught we know, bo as remote as tli.o" polar regions. In any. case, it is a question how far the Government is justified in bolstering up industries which private enterprise will not undertake. For tho vague suggestion, however, the dairy people arc asked to thank the Government. What a delicious picce ■of satire, to be' sure. But it will suit the book of the Hon. T. Mackenzie just now.
