Albany, the English sculler, defeated J. Arnst, brother of the champion, in a sculling match on the Thames, by three lengths. ' Albany was the favourite. At Middlesex station he was clear by half a minute, and led by eight lengths at Barnes, threequarters of a mile from the winningpost. He won as he pleased by four lengths in 22min. Msec. The Dominiox's rowing contributor, "Mercury," wrote on Saturday:—"On Monday 'Jack' Arnst and William Albany measure blades over the championship course on the Thames for a stake of .£•SO aside. On paper the Now Zealand-! or's task appears to be a hopeless one. It must be conceded that Fogwoll is a betteT sculler than Arnst, and according to reports of the two races between Barry and Albany, and Barry and Fogwell, the Englishman gave his conqueror a harder race than the Australian did.. Therefore, it follows that Albany is at least as £ood, if not better, than Fogwell, and, if this reasoning is correct, what chance on earth, or rather, on water, can 'Jack' Arnst have?"
