OPENING OF THE SEASON". The bowling season was opened on Saturday in almost perfect weather. All tho greens wero in good order, The ■ attendances were large. WELLINGTON CLUB. Tho AVcllingt'on Club's greens were opened on Saturday afternoon in perfect bowling went tier. Notwithstanding tho other attractions, there was a record at(eiidance, including a large uuiiiLci' of ladies. The. president of the 'club (Mr. Andrew Wylio), in an appropriate speech, welcomed ihc visitors. He referred to bawling as being the most popular of all games. He also dealt at some length on the various improvements which,had been made, during the year, and thanked all those concerned, especially the ladies. There was a record gathering at the Newtown greens, including a number of ladies and visiting bowlers, 'the president (Mr. T. Bland) welcomed the visitors and referred to tho progress of the club, and also to the numerous improvements to buildings and grounds which had been made during the winter recess. Mrs. Bland threw tho first jack, and Mrs. Scott hoisted the club banner, and the season was then declared open. A match was played between sides chosen by the president and vice-president, the latter's team winning by one point, VICTORIA CLUB. The Victoria green was also opened on Saturday. The president (Mr. MacMorran), in'a humorous speech, xompliuicnved the ladies on the assistance so readily given season after season. He mentioned that the Ground Committee and caretaker had provided a perfect green, and thai was fully shown by the subsequent play. In concluding, Mr. MacMorran mentioned that the banner of the Northern Bowling Association had waved from the-club's .flagpole on two occasions in the past; and he expressed the hope ('hat a.similar honour would result .irom (he competitions, to be. held in the city in January next. Ho then called upon Mrs. MacMorran to throw the jack and declare (he green open: • Although similar functions were being held'at the Wellington and Newtown greens (he Victoria grounds were crowded with visitors, who were hospitably entertained by the ladies. The tables were decorated with flowers, and were otherwise- attractive. At the closo of the afternoon the large quantity of provisions was divided between the Salvation Army and the Home of Compassion. JOHNSONVILLE CLUB.
Tho Johnsonviiio' Club opened their season on Saturday. The president (Mr. F T. O'Neill), extended a welcome to the largo number.of visitors, these'. including, many representatives of the' vah'(\us"city and suburban clubs. Ho called on Mrs. Jr-r wleni, wife.of the vice-presideut (Mr. ■A: Jerusalem,)- to throw the jack, after which lie declared the green open. Tho attendance of visitors (especially ladies) was tho largest yet seen in the. history of the club. Mr. A. Marsdc'n (president), in declaring the green open, hoped' that the coming season would be an enjoyable one for all. Cheers wore then given for the president, and Mrs. Marsdra, and the opening fixture, president v.'- vice-presi-dent, was commenced. Afternoon tea was dispensed by Mrs. Marsdcn,-assisted by Missos Marsdeu (2), Johnson, ' Gaynor, and Packard'. Amongst the- visitors were a couple of rinks from. the Lower Hutt Club. The viec'president's side defeated the president's side in tho aggregate by 177 to 141, a, majority of, 3d.
