WHAT IS A "WOWSER"?
AUCKLAND CLERGYMAN'S . COMMENTS. (By Toleeranh.-SDecial CorresDondent.) Auckland, October 8. The. term''"wowser" came in for some comment by the Rov. R. B. S. Hammond tit his lncotrng in His Majesty's Theatre last evening. If the term simply meant a porsi n who was keen on social reform raid Prohibition, especially, he, said he was'delighted to bo ralk-d a wowser. Tho other day ho had heard a conplo of young men use filthy language, and they wero not wowsers. He had seen a woman whoso husband liad beaten hor and blackened lior eye, and the husband was no* a wowser. He found no shrvme in tho title, but he would feel much ashamed if anyone colled him a. "waster." Anyone who once put his hand to tho plough end then gave up because people jeered and called him names would be a waster, and to'be called by that titlo would be a disgrace to him or to any other worker in tho cause of temperance.
