WATER-FINDING.

A MASTERTON SHEEPFARMEE'S WORK. .Some very sntist'actorj; work in the way of water-divining has just been effected in the Hastings and Gisborne districts by Mr, H. \V. Platt, the well-known Masterton'sueepfarmer. At To Mata, Havelock North, .Mr. Platt discovered this week six springs for Mr. Bernard Chambers, following . the finding; last season of two springs which aro now contributing from 1800 to CSOO gallons of water per day. Mr. Watt also tracwl the underground course of a stream up through the Arataki Government Experimental i''arm for over a" mile. Mr. Bernard Cham hers informed a Dominion reprc-eeutath-p that Mr. Platt evidently possessed tlie gift of water-divining in a high degree, and that the work done at-To Mata, where all the supplies arc by gravitation, had been most satisfactory. Particular reference was made by Mr. Chambers to tho etfoclivc manner in which Mr. Platt discovered two underground springs, and traced them to a conjunction, where tho violent impulse of tho forked , twig held by Mr. Platt pointed to a very largo supply of water. .Mr. Platt agrees with the Rev, Mr. Mason, the Otahuhu water-diviner, that ono may locate water without the use of the stick, simply.by the twitching movements, of tho hands, hut he points out that the nioro or less violent impulse of the article indicates in a corresponding degree the supply of water which may be expected from the spring, and how far it is situated down in the earth. At Tokomaru Hay, Mr. Platt located twentyeight springs .in ton days, springs being found, aulongst' others,, oh -the. farms of Messrs. A. ; B.;G. 8., K,, 1 , . S., and H. B. Williams, and G. A.' Busby, the .estimated supplies varying.from'soo'to 2000 gallons per day per spring. Tn tho Wairarapa a spring giving from 2000 to 3000 gallons of day was located by Mr. A. W. Cave, of Masterton. and ono of 2000 gallons on Mr. G. Sykes's Manaia farm in the , same district, and also for Mr. Con, Vallancc, Wairarapa. . ! In the Waikato, Mr. Piatt has fonnfrspYiftgs ori'thpifoYms'Cf Messrs; % Brough, H. Death, and Shaw.
