(By Tdeeraph.—Special Correspondent.) ■• Napier, October 4. Perfect weather prevailed for the spring m«oti)H of the Hawko's Bay Jockey .Club.' The- attendance was good, and tho racing was , the best seen on the course for many meetings pait. Mr. H. Coyle, tho club's handioapper, provided a splendid bill of fare, and the finishes in the Spring Handicap and in both hack races were olose and exciting. The Guineas and Stakes also provided good contests, this • . being unusually the caso in Tegard to thftso two events. Backers had a fair day; ami were very loyal in supporting the Ka-ramu stable, which turned out three winners. Tina Toa, Wainureku, and Fond Mem- / ory were the withdrawals from tho Hack Hurdles. Esnartero looked bright and muscular, and none the worse for his Wanjanui exertions. Morecambo was greatly ad'iiired, and, for a green horse, he acquitted himself well. CullinaiJ bumped his boy out of the saddle at die first fence, and Morecambe led tho field with Soots Fusilier. Oppcsite tho stand, tho latter came down, find broke , his fetlock. This loft Morecambo out by himself,, but he -stopped short at tho next fence, and tho field joined him. Here Cullimn interfered with Donzel, and sjoiled whatever chance the -latter

had. At the six furlongs, Polynices was out in front, but Morecambe again ran up to 'him, and, jumping tho next fenco well, ho led Tound the bottom bend into the straight. After that he tired badly, and Polynices and Espartero juniped the last fence-together. The top-weight'then camo on, and won easily. Longboat and Donzel finished well back. Outward, tho Kuramu representative, was niada a slightly better favourite .than Ovation, Ngakau, and Merrimak, in the Maiden Handicap. Ngakau, who was oa tho fence, began smartly, but, almost immediately, ho was'headed by Outward, and thelatter was joined by Ovation. This . pair drew away from the field, and finish- , ed first and second. Loch Mabin, who , appeared to be running on at the finish, [ was third, Esmeh and Merrimak being i next. Ngakau. was beaten' easily. ! Tho Flaxihero Hack Handicap was pro- ;■ ductive of a great finish, and, over the ; last furlong, everything except Peacemaker had a chance of winning. Vega and San Pluie monopolised the betting, but neither paid a dividend. From a goad start, Vega anil Meremere showed out, with Mnngaroa and San Pluio nest. At the bottom of the. course Gold Circle . joined them, and, at the distance, the quintette were all in a line. A splendid ! finish resulted in favour of Meremere, who, aided by her light weight, stayed I on, and beat Gold Circle, with San Pluie i just clear of Vega and Mangaroa. i There were only five runners in the Guineas, but the t'hree placed horses gave ■ the public a .splendid trial, and after a ■ very fast race, finished'within heads ot ' one another. Koyal Scotch was on the ! rails at the barrier, with Miscount on ■ tho outside. The latter was unlucky at 1 tho start, and Roj-al Scotch led off iirst. • With a furlong gone, Formulate, pulling ■ hard, went to the front, and Eoyal Scotch - was with Our Queen, while St. Peters- ' burg and Miscount were following in that • order. At the 'half-mile, St. Petersburg . joined Scotch in the lead, with Mis- , count in third place. This was the. order as they swung into a line for homo and one of the finest finishes ever seen on tb.3 course then took place. Jenkins, on the rails, seemed to have all the best of it fifty yards from home, but thfcn Miscount cain'e again, and, in the !ast fewstrides, beat him by a head. St. Petersi burg stuck to his task in great style, and his performance, considering his candiI tion, was impressive. The winner was tho fittest horse in the race, and he thoroughly deserved his victory, as he had all 'the worst of the luck till the straight was reached. Formality was withdrawn from the Hastings Stakes, leaving ten runners. Vocation looked the best of tho field,' several oral of the other runners appearing to ba very backward. In the preliminaries Ermengarde and Be-ldamo moved pleasingly, as also did Vocation.. When a start was effected Ermengarde was first put, followed bv Evadne, the others being bunched. Ermengarde was first into tho straight, where some of ttio others—notably Gnoine-T-ran very wide. Glade and ■Vocation came very fast and Ermengarde tiring, Glade went on, and won easily ; from Vocation. The winner is a bay full- ' sister to Formby, and is apparently just as good. She does not seem quite, ready however, but can be relied on to improve. Vocation was very fit. Ho much resembles Provocation in build, with an action, when galloping, strongly .reminiscent' of Elevation.. , / Goldfinder, despito his aldermanic proportions, was made favourite in the big race in which the whole of tho acceptors went to t'he post. He was in a good position, pasting the stand the first time round, being just behind Ariom and Melologue. Down tho back ho was not pushed, and appeared to bo going easily. As they turned'into the straight the favourite endeavoured to wrest the lead from the other pair, but ho failed to finish, and Voetfcang, coming along with a nico run, won by a length. Melologue was a neck behind Ariom. Tho winner was ridden a nice quiet race, and was thus able to finish better than anything else. Another splendid race was witnessed in the Waitapu Hack Handicap. Altcar was made favourite, with Allurement and Gold Circio in that order. Tho lastnamed was making his, second appearance, and ran a good race, finishing strongly after having anything but the best, of tho luck. Altcar led a bunched field till the railway bend, came to bo negotiated, and then Allurement went to the front from Merrie Lad. The latter rau very wide, and lost his position,' which Gold Circle took up. Ih a good finish, the top-weight won by a head, with Ngakan half a head away, and Merrio Lad. who again came very fast, close up fourth. San Plnie was saddled up a second time in the Final Handicap, for which Bliss tmd Bobrikoff were backed in that order. Tho latter moved very freely in .tho preliminary, and gained many friends on that account. Hβ was fortunate at tho barrier, as Oliver, in a measure, anticipated the pulling of the lover, and was out first. From this out tho race was a procession, and, though he was ridden right out, tho black champion was not headed. Bliss was noarest to him at the distance, but then retired. Dazzling came very fast at the • finish, and .beat Blue Lake for second money.
