EFFECT OF AUSTRALIAN SUBSIDY. aj Tolcrrapli—Press Asec-iation-Copyrisht Melbourne, October I. In the Federal House of Representatives in reply to a question, Mr. Batchelor, Jthiis'.cr for External Affairs, stated that .E2ISG had been paid for tho Independent Cablo Association as a subsidy on press cables. An advantago had accrued by the increase of business over tho Pacific cable. Tho gain to the Commonwealth amounted to ,£2ICG annually. There- had also boe-n an advantage in tho increase in postal revenue for the transmission of messages on tho land linos. Altogether, added Mr. Batcholor, tho Commonwealth would get about threo times the amount it paid by way of subsidy.
