NOTES ON THE RACING. (3y TclcjrrapU.—Snecial Correspondent.) Wanganui, September 25. Fine weather mis experienced for "Guineas Day" at Wanganui, ami tho going was splendid. The attendance, however, dill not appear to be up to the standard, but speculation was brisk, Gwnl racing was seen in all the events, but backers fatal badly, e.s only one favourite got his head in front all day. Excellent racing was witnessed in the opening event, and the enthusiasm of tho crowd was raised by tho great contest wliicli ensued as tlio result of tho handi-

capper's adjustments. Boanerges, however, finished up a slightly heller favourite than Faunus. Both horses stripped in perfect order, anil their connections were very sanguine of their ability to will. At the start True Shot led olf. and Kauroa was loft at the post. Passing the fourfurlung p-.isl, the order was: True Shot, .Master, Sylvia, Faunus. Boanerges and Gladiole. Across the bottom the lavourites moved up on the outside, and Merry Frank came verv iasi - . Vnuiius, Boanerges. anil Merry Frank had their names called in fhe run down the straight, but Master Sylvia was not noticed on the rails, and, in a fine linisli. he Avon by a lieck. Boanerges was a length away, and then eame Faunus, a similar distance (.behind.

St. Luap and King Simon wero withdrawn from the Maiden Handicap, ing a dozen runners. Despite tlio lact that he had not had a race lor many months, the Kilcheran colt, Ireland, who does not secin to have t'lirnislicd as well as might be expected, was made a roaring favourite. He went out smartly alter the lift of the barrier, and had Praefectus a.s company for half the distance, ■'■"en he came away, and was not again headed. Topic and Jargon had a great race for second place, victory eventually going to the latter. Blackeney, who got oil badi>, was fourth, aud Tauri fifth. The Guineas field attracted considerable attention, and the two favourites passed their "examination" very well. Miscount appeared a perfect picture, aiul so did I'oval Scotch, except perhaps that, he was a trifle on the big side, ilangiatua and Labour Dav looked well, and Couiuerieit bore evidence of having done a very so.id preparation. Bronze looked empty, and was reported to be doing badly, -uiscount and Koyal Scotch were quickest awav. but the forcer, on the fence, led round the bend. Down the back he was out in front with Rangiat.ua alongside, Royal Scotch and Counterieit whippin D the field across the bottom, lho .race appeared to V>e OVCT , lien> \. but then Counterfeit put in an extraordinary run, and, under the whip, overhauled all but the leader. In the straight she had a length to make up, but her guns, and, in the last fiftv y-id.., she got on to Miscount's girihs. Ihc paii were now hard at it, and a terrific stmgglc ensued. Jones put his stick, awa, but his confrere drew Ills, and, ill tlio last few lengths, the pair were love., and dashed past the post locked togethei. The indie's verdict we,at to Counterfeit bv a head. Ho.val Scotch was three lengths away,' third, and Eangiatua fourth. . . "Waiputere was a strong favourite \a Open Hurdles, but Espartero brouglit oft a surprises by taking charge at the ilagfall, and leading throughout. The loipedo horse, who looks as lie never looked before, outjumped his he d at the iusi. fence, and was not again headed. With half a mile goue, Windage was alongside him, but was being ridden to keep Ins position. Waiputere was. ten lengths further back, and the remainder, tailed off. With six furlongs to go, V aipulere closed up, and "Windage retired. At the next fence Espartero gained a eoup.e ot lengths, and the race was then all over. The leader was steadied in the run from the last fence, and Waiputere momentarily showed up, but O'Connell turned round in the saddle and smiled, and then gave his mount a reminder, and lie can:o away again. Gaelic was a poor third, while Gold'oird and I.eolanter were tailed

off. Another pronounced favourite went, under in the Hack Hurdles when Captain Bell was defeated by Ilawick. Ihc panwere out in front the whole way, bin at no sta"e did Ilawick let tho Fcildmg horse away, and as he was the superior juniper he won comfortably. Prior to the start of the race, Merry Lawn, who always hangs out badly, ran into the trees with 11. Telford, whom he dislodged and rolled on. The horso was brought back t'i the paddock, and C. Cress was put uj). Telford's injuries, however, were not serious. The Putilci ITaek Race was a good betting event, several horses belli!? well backed. Monologue was fir.=t out, but was immcdiatoly joined by Gold Isattery, and the rair led "to the turn, where Patriotic joined in. and, settling the leaders, he won comfortably by a length. Monologue was a head in'front of Minora, who finished very fast, and then came Katua and Gold Uatterv. Merry Frank, the favourite, was badly 'left, and was in the rear the whole way. Elwnite, who pat un Gib. overweight in order to j.rcuro Jenkins's services, was prominent to the tuni, where ho faded out.

A good fast gallop was put up by Goodwin Park in tho Spring Handicap, when she defeated Lady Menicliikoff by a head, with Coronuandel the same distance away. Equitas was the only withdrawal, thus leaving twelve runners. The Rover and Mulga Bill were almo.'t equal favourites, wit.il Smiiax ako heavily supported. The later was soon in front, .and the and Coromandel drew out from tho field, v.-hich bunched at the turn. Then Goodwin Park (under the whip! singled himself out. The I'ovr was unlucky, and may hf.vo won but for being stopped twice in tho race. SECOND DAY'S ACCEPTANCES. (By Telesrnnh.—Press Association.) Wanganui, September 28.
