SKIM-MILK OR WHEY?

TEST OF RESPECTIVE VALUES. The question of.the respective value's of skiiii-niilk, butter-milk, and whey for pig-feeding is sometimes raised, each having its advocates.,- A test bearing on the point in question'- has -been made at ;tho Ontario Experiment. Station. ■ ",., Five groups of pigs were taken for tno purpose of demonstration. To group one was fed about two and a half pounds of skiin-iriilk to every pound of barley and frozen wheat, ,to whioh some pollard was added. That was called meal, and every group got the same meal. Group two was fed an equal quantity in pounds of butter-milk and meal. Group three was fed common cheese factory whey in place of skim-milk, and the same ration of meal. Group four was fed whey that had been run through the separator to take out the butter-fat (three t'ehths -of ono per cent per 1001b.), and meal as. the rest. Group five was fed the same quantity, of meal and water for their drink. . . . Tho skim-milk, gave the best results, aiid it required 2541b. of meal and 6281b. of skim-milk to make 1001b. gain. The buttor-milk ran the skim-milk n neck-and-heck race. It took 2501b. of meal and 6311b. of skim-milk to make 1001b. gain. The ordinary whey group rose to 2CSIb. of meal and- 7471b, ot whey to make 100. lb. gain. On separated whey it took 297 lb.; of meal and 77-tlb. of whey to mako 1001b. gain. On water and meal it required 4301b. of meal to make 1001b. . ■This experiment sets up plain guide. posts as to the respective feeding value of these different forms of liquid food, when fed in conjunction with the meals specified. Of course, if maize meal had betm fed in part the results would probably havo varied somewhat, but the com--5;-arison may be regarded as a fairly accurate indication of tho divergence in value as a food of these residual products of tho dairy and factory.
