THE GRASS GRUB.

AN OLD.FRIEND. A ray of brightness in the gloom created' of late by the grass grub is thrown by Mr. ■■■ John Rennie, of- Doyle&ton, who writes as under;to a southern paper: — "By the attention (riven to grass grub this year ono would supposo it was tho first tiiup the grub-has given any troUblc. r havo lihd the grass grub on my farm more - or less foi , the past twenty-five, yews, and -'once you get to know its habits it. is not so'difficult to provide against. The principal thing is to put a sufficient quantity of cocksfoot in the grass -mixture when laying down. The cocksfoot' is a deeply rooting plant, mid takes n good hol<l of the "ground, and the grub can make little progress, and in cocksfoot docs more good than harm. "I havo been farming over forty years, and have never had an acre of crop injured by the grub, nor have I missed ft niangold crop for tho past thirty year?, and I have seen the grub reach the flying stago after the mangolds have been up. This winter I had a small paddock grubridden. I. put on the> chain harrows after the first rain, and resowed it with mixed grasses, sowed a bag of basic, slag harrowed again, and now the grass is as thick as a mat, and no doubt the paddock has benefited by the working of the grub. On my land I am satisfied that the grub, like tho worm, does more good than harm. On light lands.l would advise, when it first shows signs of grub, to harrow or grub, sow seed and plenty of slag. . You will soon havo a better 'strike' of grass than- before."
