Grants were authorial ;« follow:—Clyde Quav. retaining wall; Levin, residence, gas "fittings; liukanui, ground improvements; J'ackakariki, well; 1 pper llntt, half cost of ground improvements; I pper Hutt, well; Tokomaru. residence, extra tank; Tnkomaru, school, washhnnd basin? and drainage; Tokoinarn, school, repairs, fencing; Terrace, water supply; Martinborough, residence, shed: and Hutt, grant to committeo for erection of bicycle stall.
A recommendation of the Government that, school children should !:--■ instructed in lire drill was approved. A motion by the chairman that tlio board should again apply to the Government for the building of a central ball aI; the Master ton School brought forth a little, diseus.-ion. Mr. Buchanan said he would like.to be convinced that there wns n pressing need for this, lie moved that the question should be postponed till next meeting. He wanted the matter deferred till inoro information was forthcoming. Mr. Vile thought they should pay a good deal of attention to the opinion of the inspectors, and press for tho central ball. Mr. Buchanan s amendment was not seconded, and the motion was carried.
Tho Department notified that the following grants had been made:—Karori (additions), ,£600; Alfredton (residence), £121; and Pongoroa (residence), £100. Regarding Ihe question of a request for the establishment of a district high school at Eketahuna, the chairman said that there were nineteen pupils available, whereas the regulations required an average attendanco of twenty, which would mean a total of about tweuty-five. It was decided lo sond Eketahuna a copy of the correspondence on the matter. Regarding a Matahiwi ]>etition for removal of the school, a report is to.be obtained from the inspector. The following library subsidies were granted—Mount Cook Girls', .£2; Huia Road, £1; Te Horo, £2; and Taucru, 17s. Gd. As to Makuri, the board could not sco its vray to make retrospective grants on account of lwoks or moneys donated in the past. The following resignations were accepted:—Miss F. (Neilson. secondary assistant, Carterton; and Mr. Young, Akitio.
