GROWTH OF POPULATION.
CENSUS RETURNS. Ono of tho census returns for 1911 was presented to Parliament' yesterday. Tho population of tho North Island is 563,729, and of tho South Island 414,120; Stewart Island, 357; Chatham Islands, 258; Kermadec Islands, 4; making a total for tho Dominion (exclusive of Maoris and inhabitants of tho annexed Pacific Islands) of 1,008,408. There aro 531,910 males and 470,558 females in tho Dominion. Included in the total numbers there aro 1475 male half-castes and 1404 female halfcastes, living- as Europeans. There are ■ also 2512 Chinamen and 88 Chinoso woinou included. There aro 210,734 occupied dwellings, 15,234 unoccupied dwellings, ' and 1508 buildings in New Zealand. Tho tents and dwellings with canvas roofs number no fewer than 4691. Tho wooden dwellings are lnigcly in excess of any other, viz, 209.7C0. Tho number of females to every 1(K males during the various censuses from 1858 to tho present day is as follows :- 76.41, 02.1G, 61.53, G5.75, 70.52, 75.17, 79.40, 81.72, 85.28, 85.26, 59.31, 90.33, 88.G5, 89.57. Tho number of persons to a square uiilo has increased from 1.G41 in 18G4 to 9.G90 at tho present time. Tho number of persona to an inhabited dwelling docs not vary very much. It is practically the samo now cs it was in ISSB, namely, 4-.GG. Tho population and increases since Inst census in the different provincial districts aro as follow:— Totals. Increases.
