Extensive alterations are just on completion to the business premises of tho Wairarapa Fanners' Co-operative Association, Limited,' Masterton. The old front, which had done duty for thirty odd years, is entirely demolished, and its place taken by a very up-to-date shop front. The regulation style has been entirely departed from, whereas the ceiling of tho building is sixteen feet high, tho windows are closed at ten feet, thus allowing six feet of clear glass along tho entire front, throwing an immense amount of light into tho shop. A "hip" verandah, tho back of which is painted white, increases the light to a very great extent. The windows (of which there aro seven, including.an "island" window, and exclusive of two 6how-<;a.;es in the doorway and three show-cases in alley-ways botween tho windows) aro built within thirteen inches of the ground. The nickel • frames and sills blamling with tho glass, give tho effect c-f almost solid glass frontage. Originally, tho glass frontago was some 80ft., but the new glass frontage was somo 80ft., thus increasing the space for showing goods, to practically double. The spaces between the windows arc all tiled, as is also the vestibule in which the "island" window is built. The tiles are in soft shades of fawn and blue, with the initials of tho association. (W.F.C.A.) worked in. The ceilings are finished in metal work, with ventilators in each window, while the doorways aro in cedar, which contrasts well with tho finishing dead white colour of the windows. The lighting, which is another feature of a handsomo piece of work, is by means of seven 1009-candle-power light, of which six arc under tho verandah, and ojc in the .vestibule. The architects are Messrs. Penty and Lawrence, tho contractor Mr. W. H. Bennett, both of Wellington. Mr. R. Martin, also of Wellington, did the painting and glazing. The whole is a distinct city improvement. The whole effect is good, both from outside and inside., a,nd reflect"! credit alike, on thp association, the architects, and the builders. Messrs. Crichton and M'Kay, architects, invito tenders for the erection of a shop at Palmerston Xorth. Messrs. Chas. Begg . and Company, Willis Street, draw attentiou to their list of new and successful songs. Messrs. Tilloard. Xahisch and Rons, architects, Ballance Street, invito tenders for the erection of a printing house and public am', editorial offices. Particulars appear elsewhere in this issue. Messrs. Brandon and Johnston have received instructions from the Registrar of the Supreme Court to sell at their rooms, Lambton Quay, certain sections of land. Particulars aro given elsewhere in this issue. ' "Ho was tho most superstitious poker player I ever saw." "Yes, and he got so superstitious here lately that ho doesn't play tho game any more. "Is that so?" Yes. lie suddenly discovered that thero are thirteen cards in each suit." John Ccdric Coates, described as a gentlemen fnrmer, of Harold's AVood (Esspx), was fined .£5 and costs for cruelty to a cow' at Homi'ord (Essex). The evidence showed that the animal caused the defendant; some annoyance, and it was alleged that he discharged a double-bar-relled gun at it to keep it quiet. For the defenco it was stated that the cow was tlio worst in tho country, that it jumped fences like a Welsh sheep, drank its mvn milk, and, in the words of the defending barrister, "ate everything it could lay its hand on." The London City Corporation, as ground landlord, is in future tu receive .£IBSO from one property in King William Street, for which it had so far received only £'&■
