FEATHERSTON. It is reported that stops are to be taken to endeavour to iipset the recent poll taken in tta Feathersbon county on tho rating question. The grounds of objection are not stated. Mr. M. Lust, who has been in business here for several years, is leaving Featherston shortly to reside in Havelock, Marlborough. Tho following team will represent the Featherstou Golf Club in the return match against the Miramar Club on September 25, at Miramar:—G. T. Fenwick, A. B. Balfour, A. J. Toogood, F. Bladen, J. W. Card, J. T. Bicknell, B. Speedy, F. C. Everton, J. Cotter, and W. Bentou. "Monarchy v. Republicanism" was debated by representatives of the Featherston and Carterton Debating; Societies at Cartorton on Monday night, the FeatherBton Club taking, tho sido of "Monarchy." The Carterton Club won the contest. SHANNON, Tho Rev. Mr. J. A. M'Kcnzic presided at tho final debate of tho local literary and debating society on Tuesday night, in tho Druids' Hall, when Mr. J. Davis moved: "That war between Great Britain and Germany is probable." Mr. J. Traynor supported Mr. Boris, the motion being opposed by Messrs. W. Murdoch and T. E. Mullan. A lively discussion, interspersed, by a good deal of. humour, followed, in which Messrs. Exall, Barclay, C. Clayton, Gunning. Sclby, Hensman, and others, took part. On the motion being nut, it was carried by 22 votes to 11. Next Tuesday, "Bardwell versus Pickwick," followed by a "social" will conclude a successful session. FEILDING. It is understood up hero that the Electoral Boundary Commission has decided to put the suburbs of Feilding. on tho western side into the Oroua electorate, which is just whaHs wanted. It is not the intention of ,the shopkeepers of Feilding to observe Dominion Day (next Monday) as a holiday. Mr. H. Fisher; delegates to Feilding District Cricket Association, Messrs. G. C. Hare and J. Murray. The Lyceum Picture Theatre—.l now building erected opposite the pest office— was officially opened 'this week by the Mayor (Mr. Goodboherc) and Mr. Hugh Wilson, of Wellington. There was a large attendance despite the rough cold weather.

The quarterly meeting of the Firo Board was held yesterday. These 'present were:—Messrs. E. Goodbehero (chairman), liwon, Mallard, Simpson, Saywell, and Ploasants. Members expressed the opinion that the superintendent should make a report on all public halls, church buildings, and school buildings in tho borough, and a motion to this effect was adopted. HASTINGS. Tho first taxi-cab has made its appearance in Hastings.' It has been imported by a livery stable firm which, it is understood, is also making provisions for running a couple of motor buses between Hastings and Havelock. Tlie Borough Council is now making vapid progress with its high-pressure water supply.
