Last week's figures of the Bank of England gave no indication of a pending monetary stringency such as now appears to have affected Consols, on the contrary thq figures were exceptionally satisfactory. Thoro was an increase in the metal reserve, of over one million sterling, the reserve was £1,4.0,0-0 greater and the proportion of reserve to liabilities stood at 58.10 per eent., and this proportion precludes tho possibility of any advance in bank rato. At the samo time- it must be pointed out that there was an increase in the borrowings from . the bank over £1,500,000. Tho Kuropean money markets are usually disturbed towards the end of the September quarterly, partly bcca,u£c tho banks call in loans to make their quarterly balancesheets look strong, and because there, is then a demand for credits to meet engagements, and move crops to the places of consumption. In previous years bank rato has been raised early in September, and there appeared 3omo hope from the strength displayed by the Bank of Ensland figures that the advance would be considerably delayed this year, but the monetary situation in Germany raako3 -the outlook unfavourable. The discount rate of the Imperial Bank of Germany has been raised to 5 per cent, or 2 per cent, above tho rates current in London and Paris. The monetary movement in Germany is no doubt due to the heavy withdrawals of credit by France and Russia, the run on the Savings Banks, and tho heavy defalcations of ba.nk directors recently reported. It ie not unlikely also that the dcclino in Consols, recorded yesterday, is due to foreigners realising on this security. However, the German movement is bound to be reflected in London, for the rise in the Gorman bank' rato will attract capital to Berlin, and London will sulfer in the transfer. An early rise of tho Bank of Ensland discount rate may now be expected. LONDON WOOL SALES. The fifth of the scries of London wool sales will commence on Tuesday next, when' it is expected that a total of 127.5C0 bales will be available for sale. The statistics for the approaching sale, and tho6c for tho September sale of laEt year comparo as under:— Sept., 1911. Sept.. 1910. Bales. Bales. New arrivals 130,000 132.C00 Forward direct 43.CC0 48,000 , 87,000 E4,0C0 Oid stocks 40.5C0 31,51:0 s 127,500 115.5C0 The quantity to be offered is larger than last year, and with the disturbance caused through labour revolts, and the reports as to money market stringency, it would bo satisfactory to see prices maintained at the level ruling at the last sales. Messrs. Pyno and C-i, of Christchurch. have issued a very interesting review of the wool, frozen meat, and livo stock markets. The review deals with a. great many other topics. About fourteen pages aro devoted to wool, and a. vast amount of information and opinion is compressed into tho space. There are many statistical tables, and useful references to tho crops, live stock, and trade and coniniercc of New Zealand.
