CITY COUNCIL.
4 FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of the Wellington City Council was held last evening. There were present: Mr. J. Smith (Deputy-Mayor), who presided in the absence of the Mayor (Mr. T. M. Wilford), and Councillors R. Fletcher, A. 11. Hindmarsh, J. Fuller, jun., J. E. Fitzgerald, W. H. 1 , . Barber, L. M'Kenzie, J. Godber, J. Trevor, G. Frost, F. Cohen, and E A. Cameron. ■ land For Recreation. The Financo Committee recommended thai' the City Solicitor be instructed to draw up a clause exempting from payment of rates, land purchased for recreation purposes. Tho Acting-Mayor explained that the council wished to have this clause inserted in some Act of Parliament to relievo the city from the necessity of paying rates oil land recently purchased .for recreation purposes at Lyall Bay. The clause was adopted. . • Brougham Avenue. The following recommendation of the Finance t Committee was adopted: That application be made to tht, (.iovernnienl for the variation 'of the exemption of Brougham Avenue, so as to provide that no new building shall be erected within 10 feet of its southern boundary, between certain points. . ; Buildings Needing Repairs. The Public Health Committee recommended .that notices' be served on the I miners and occupiers of certain premises in Lambton Quay, Courtenay Place, Tory Street, Happy Valley Road, Taranaki Street,-Wellington Terrace, and Manners Street (nine buildipg&dhiaUHorcaiTj.'oub' certain repairs recommended' by the Department of Public Works. Condemnation Notices. The same committee recommended that condemnation notices be served with respect to the following places:—Stables, etc., at. 12 Courtenay Place, premises 23 Taransiki Street, structures at rear of 122, 32, and 54 Courtenay- Place, premises at 191 Aro Street, structure at -10 Courtenay Place. committee further recommended that all necessary steps be taken' for the immediate demolition of stables, Cambridge owned ■by ' the Official Assignee, and lately occupied by Ritsons. Cab-stand Moved. It' was decided, consequent upon the construction of the new tramway along Customhouse Quay, that (he number of cabs allowed OD the Customhouse Quay stand be limited to two, and the remaining cabs bp permitted to stand in Hunter Street along tho south side between Custom•house Quay and Victoria Street.
Other Matters. The Ontlying Districts Committee ported having received an opinion from the City Solicitor with respect to the resurvoy. of Vc#oltown. Legislative power should be obtained. The matter was referred to tho Legislation Committee to obtain the necessary legislative power. ■ The question with respect to the private streets, fet out in the Wellington City Empowering Act, 1909, and declared to be public streets, was also reported upon by the council, whi<;h recommended that tho City Engineer bo instructed to prepare the necessary plans and estimates for the construction of tame, and that the officers report as to the amounts that will be payable by the owners of properties having frontages to such streets. It was also resolved to apply for tho exemption of the streets . referred to from the provisions of Section 117 of tho PubWorks Act, IDOS, subject to such conditions with respect 'to the building line as the Governor-in-Council might think fit to mpose. A petition from residents of Melrose Crescent and Sutherland Road, raking that tiio track from Newtown Park to Melrosa Crescent be repaired, was referred to the. Reserves Committee of tho City Council last night, with a rcommendation that a proper track be formed.
