FOOTBALL ON THE BASIN RESERVE.
SHOULD PLAYERS PAY? \ In the report of the Beserves Commit* tee presented to the City Council last night there appeared tho following 1 clause:— "That from the commencement of ■ next winter nil nrlult players of winter games be charged Oα. per head per game, tho bodies controlling such players to bo responsible for the collection, of the fees,"as recommended by the sub-committee." A deputation from the Wellington Cricket Association, headed by the chairman (Mr. Martin Luckic), waited upon tho council to urge that tho clause be passed. Mr. Luckic said that as winter ' sports damaged tho Unsin Bcseivo to sowo extent the plnyors should bo charged for : the privilege of playing there, anil that tho funds realised should be devoted to ' tho maintenance of the ground.. He point- ; cd out that cricketers were charged lsi 1 per head for Saturday games on tho reserve, aud every penny of the money so ; collected was spent in the preparation of wickety. Ho suggested also that the council mip.iit avail itself of'.the services of tho association's groundsman during the whiter months, i>n<l. so relieve the association of tho necessity of providing for his ealarv in the oIT-season. It was explained in the course of subsequent discission fliat it was not intondwl that a charge should bo, made for tho uso of any ground but the Basin Reserve. Some councillors objected to this ground boing the onlv one to be charged for, and still others objected to tho clause going through unless it specified to what grounds it was to apply. ~,,,, The. cla:.i» was referred back to the committee for further consideration.
