His time at Homo was limited, and ho had little opportunity or inclination for travelling and sightseeing. He was in. London for the Coronation, of course, and ho also visited his old University, Cambridge. He noticed changes in the Universitv, but only such as ho knew he might find. Mr. T. M. Wilfortl. M.P., Mayor of Wellington, was unable to attend tho meeting of the City Council last night. Ho has taken his seat once at the table since his recent illness, and lately he has been comparatively well. Ho caught a chill a few days ago, however, and ho was too unwell last night to Tie out of doors. Mr. John F. Jewell, who has been Consul for the United States at Melbourne for over three years, has been transferred to Yladivc^tock. Mr. H. N. Wells Newton has resigned Hie position of building inspector aud consulting engineer lo tho Onslow Borough Council. Pressure of other business is bis reason. Last night the Borough Council accepted ' tho resignation with regret. Mr. F. Heldt, of Apiti, lias resigned his commission as Justice of the Peace.. The appointment of Mr. C. Aldridge ns factories' inspector is oaacelled by a notico in this week's Gazette. It is understood that the Government has appointed Mr. John M. Johnston, of Palmorston Nqrth, a director of the Bank of New Zealand, vico Mr. W. H. Quick, deceased. Mr. Johnston was boni at Glenavy, County Antrim. Ireland, in 185S, aud was educated at Belfast. Dublin, and Penrith (Cumberland). Ho arrived in Nc.r Zealand by the Lady Jocelyn in 1878, with tho Vcsey Stewart special settlement party for Kakikati, Bay of Plenty, but owing to discouraging reports of the place, he did not go on the land, but accepted' a post with the Bank of New Zealand, serving in all parts of the Dominion. Ho resigned when manager of the Marton branch of the bank to accept tlie position of manager at Palmcrston North for the New Zealand Loan a.nd Mercantile Agency Co. In 1901 ho commenced business in Palmerston North, and lias been closely . associated with tho district ever since. He has boon hon. treasurer of the Manawatu A. and P. Association, treasurer of tho Manawatu Club, president of tho Chamber of Commerce, secretary of the Mauawatu Racing Club, and was secretary to the recent Racing Commission. The Eev. W. M. Trigg (Congregational Independent) has been appointed aa officiating ministor under the 'Marriage Act. ■ Mr. O. Gore Adam?, youngest son of Mr. C. W. Adams. Bollevup Road, Lower Hutt, has lately been appointed mining engineer to a very largo mining company in Chualla Grande, Pazna, Bolivia, South America.
