STUD STOCK DELAYED.

EFFECT OF THE SHIPPING STRIKE. Several breeders who have stock on the wateT half expected that their purchases would come to hand .by tho Rotorua, which arrived from London yesterday, but tho vessel brought no stock at all. It appeai-s that as far as shipment by tho Rotorua was concerned difficulties arose iu connection with tlio recent shipping strike in London, and the position is'made clear by th-o following auvico dated August •!, received by Mr. \V. J. Birch, of 'i'horesby, Marton, irom his agents:— "Wo regret to say that it was not possible to shin your Devon cattle yesterday per Rotorua, as ai ranged, owing to the shipping strike. Every arrangement had been mnde, and your anima's, with other tb.iee, boxes and fodder were alongside that steamer on Wednesday morning, but tho New Zealand Shipping Company could not take them. Wo did everything in our power to get them shipped per Rotorua, hut finding it impossible, we, after much difficulty, succeeded in getting them taken on board the Kia Ora, which sailed this morning for Auckland and Wellington."

The Jersey cattle purchased by Mrs. Stuckey, of Masterton, for Mr. J. did not arrive by the Rotorua yesterday, as was expected. Tho only stock on the vessel was n crate containing twelve poultry for Mr. T. Sherltcn, of Wellington. Tho importation comprises 'i Wynndottes, i white leghorns, and 4 brown leghorns, from the best laying strains in Tasmania. During July, IU draught horses wereshipped from the Bluff for Melbourne nnd other parts of tho Commonwealth. Chick-rearing is not only profitable, but a pleasure, when you feed "A. and P." Chick Raiser. It is a complete and properly-blendwl food for Young Chicks. Obtainable from all storekeepers.—Advt. Although the grass grub has censed to work in revrral districts of the Ashburton county, it will bo many mouths, says a southi-.rn writer, before the grass 'pastures will lie fit for carrying any quantity of stock. Tho damage wrought in the grass pastures and cereal crops in the district represents a lo.y of thousands of pounds to tho farmer. A Willowby farmer recently lost a valuable Clydesniare inare, and on a postmortem'examination being made, the animal's stomach was found to bo completely honeycombed with hot fly grubs. Dairy farmers must have strong, pervicoable, and easily-cleaned cans. Victor is tho name- of tho can that suits every requirement, and it pays handsomely to use these cans and no others. Evefy lid will fit every can. Send for a. catalogue to Albert J, Parton, Caiterton, •
