FERTILISING VALUE OF LUCERNE.

The fertilising value of lucerno as a nitrogen collector from the atmosphere is not-sufficiently taken into account by farmers, says an. exchange. When tho crop is ploughed in, an inestimable contribution is mado to the soil's fertility by tho stubble and roots. It is mot recommonded to plough under any considerable growth as a green manure, as tlio hay crop is too valuable. Its market valuo would buy more fertilisers than the same growth is worth for humus. After a field has stood for five or six years tho roots havo added largely to the humus content. It is estimated that the fertilising value of the stubble and six and a half inches of roots ploughed under is about ,£4 per acre,; whilo the value of the stubble and entire root system' is not less than £7 per acre.
