At the Supreme Court 10-day, before Mr. Justice Chapman, Alfred Burnide, alias l'earce, alias Baruiclc, was found guilty of as.-.tultiug and robbing with violence one James hannawc. There wero fourteen previous convictions against accused who was sentenced to twelve, months' hard labour, and ordered lo bo, detained for four years' reformative Croak mcut. A case is proceeding in which Georgo Brown, Thomas Habgood, and Henry Charles Stewart are charged with having entered the dwelling of a widow named Caroline Broadlnirst at night, and demanding food with intent to steal. Taihapo,, September 18. ■ About 8 p.m. on Saturday a firo in Ellis and Dan-ill's store, Mataroa, totally destroyed the building and stock. It originated in a storeroom, whore a lamp was being used. WANGANUI AND EDUCATION. Wanganui, September 18. At a meeting of the Wanganui Education Board to-night some interesting figures cullcd from the Departmental statistics regarding Wanganui district wero given by tho chairman, Mr. Pirniii. Last year .£3738 was collected in donations, subscriptions, and interest on bequests. No other district could compare with this, Auckland being nearest with .£3OOO liss, while Wanganui' subscribed nearly half tho amount collected in New Zealand. In fc£s from technical and district high schools .£1853 had been paid, and Auckland was again next with .£IOOB. Competitive designs for tho now Infants' Scnool wero received from Feilding, Palmerston, Wellington, and ChrisCchurch, and from local men. The design of T. li. Battle, a local architcct, was'accepted. Tho new school is to cost .£3OOO. The board is also calling for applications for a Principal for tho new Technical College, at a salary of .£450.
