HARRIERS.
Tho annual five-mile cros,-.-countr,v elianipionj-hip nmlfr the auspices of the Brooklyn Harriers' Club was run at Miramar on Saturday. Sixteen competitors faced the starter, out of an entry of seventeen. ' Right from the start to the far golf links F. Byrne ltd, being followed closely by C. Murray, A". Byrne, A. Cook, and F. Hodson. At this stage C. Murray and F. Hodson ran in the lead till within about fifty yards of the finish, where F. llodson moved up, and in the final burst passed the tape a winner by two yards. The Scaled Handicap was won by S. Murray (•Imin. oOsoe.), 1; H. G. AYilson (-limn. 50 sec.), 2; A. S. Olliver (tniin. flOsee.), 3. At the conclusion of the run, Air. H. A. Wright, AI.P., as president of the club, congratulated F. Hodson on his third successive win, and also C. Murray on his fine running. Messrs. Hodson and Murray responded. Next week, the run takes place from Wadestown, not from Island Bay as previously intended. The AYedncsday section of tile club run on AA r ednesday from Brooklyn as the guests of their vice-prcsident, Dr. C'ouzcns.
The Wellington Harriers' five-mile championship was derided at Miramar en Saturday under the very worst weather conditions possible, competitors having to face a howling northerly all the way on the return journey. C. Cowberry again proved his superiority over his clul>mates by winning, for the second year in succession, with a substantial margin of Msec. His time was Slmin. Usee. His brother, Felix, was'second, 32min. Sosee.; F. Wilton third, 37scc. away, 33min. ]2sec.; AY. Press fourth, 33min. 18sec. Also ran: Pinckney, Snick, Burnett, Power, Johnson, Dement, and Reid. From an even start, effected by Mr. Bennett. Pinckney and Johnson went to the front. At the quarter-mile tho positions were: F. liowberry, followed by C. Rowberry, Press, and Wilton. At tho mile post, the order was: C. Rowberry, F. liowberrv, Pinckney, Wilton, Sale'.;, Press, and the rest close up. When the Keatoun Road was reached on the home turn, (lie order was: C. and F. Rowberry, Wilton, Pinckney, and Press. Press then moved up to third place, but was beaten by Wilton at the finish. The winner receives the championship medal presented !>v ilr. Burnett, and also holds Mr. Stuart Robinson's Challenge Shield for the next twelve months. A sealed handicap event was also run in conjunction with the championship. This was also won by C. Rowberry from scratch, 31min. Wsec.'j L. Ralck, second. 31miu. 52see.; handicaps, 2min. lOsec.; F. Rowberry, third, 32min. ISsec.; AA , AA att and W. H. Pollock were timekeepers and handicappers. Mr. H. A. Lamb presented the first .trophy for the handier,]). After the race members and friends were entertained at afternoon tea. Next Saturday's run takes placo at Mr. F. J. Ellison's residence at Johnsonville.
