"A POLITICAL DEADLOCK."
"What is a Political Tarty?" was the question Professor W. T. Mills sought to answer in liis lecture at the Opera House last night. Mr. 13. Tregear presided. Professor Mills began by telling many of the things a political party was not. Such words as "creed" and "loyalty" had nothing to do with a political party, which was, as Mr. John Burns had said, merely "a voluntary organisation or association of persons seeking the public welfare with regard to some matter about which they were all agreed." Generally, what lie tried to show was that in New Zealand, as in nil other countries the world over, tho line of cleavage betwren existing parties was not on tho really vital questions 'of tho day. Tho only reason why things went wrong was not becauso people wanted them wrong, but becauso they wore not organised sulliciently to get what they wanted. There was, in fact, a political deadlock, which could not bo got over except by the union of what tho speaker termed the _ decent, useful people on the one hand against tho useless people on tho other.
