In his address he reviewed tho history of tho university from the days of barbarism prevailing in Scotland 500 years ago till to-day, when there was some danger of Scotland becoming a spoon-fed nation. He emphasised .thy. growth of toleration and tho gradual supersession' of violence by tho law. When he averaged tho centuries he was inclined to tako a hopeful view of tho future; he was persuaded there was a constant movement for the better in tho world.
