The vagaries of tho railway fares where the general rates come into conflict with suburban fares are amusing to those who do not suiter thereby (comments the Auckland "Star"). Two ladies who went second-class from Grecnlane to Manurewa last week arc at a loss to understand why they should liavo been charged 2s. 2d. return when, had they taken their tickets from Auckland, an extra eight miles in the train there and back, they could have travelled for Is. sd. Another lady of tho same party fared even worse, as sho went from Auckland, but was not allowed to break her journey- at Greenlano to join her friends, because that was not within the 20-mile limit, and had to pay Gd. extra, which brought her faro to 2s. Bd., when she could have done (he whole journey from Auckland to Mauureira and back for Is. !id.
