Larsen defeated Georgo Matlei'son by four lengths. ' Says tho Sydney "Referee" of the above race:—"On September 10, Georgo Matterson, of Kogarah, but lately of Middlo Harbour, will meet, on liis own water, that exceedingly lino sport Eddie Larsen, of the Richmond River, in a match ill best-and-best boats for .£2OO stakes. The. public should indeed be treated to a very lino race, as both men arc clean, straight sports, who stand high, in tho esteem of all the rowing public. Besides this, tho men are very evenly matched, and will both fight hard right to the finish, If liarseu can bo described as a man with plenty of heart and grim determination, at least'the samo can bo said of Georgo Mattel-sou. Tho pity of tlio whole thing •is that neither man is over-blessed with avoirdupois. Both have many of tho • qualities that go to make champions, and, in condition, a clinking race should bo ' witnessed. Matterson was trained for tho race, by Harry Fcnico, tlio 'Australian 1 champion. Larsen, who is in tlio capablo hands of Syd. Tho third animal meeting of the Athletic Foot.ha.ll Sports Club was held . at tho Y.M.C.A. rooms on Friday evening, Mr. F. C. Atkinson presiding. Tho report stated that the club did useful work duriijg tho past season by holding two sports meetings and a swimming race, and its value as a means of keeping together (during the summer months) members of tho Athletic Football Club has been considerable. Two members of tho club hail represented tho Wellington Cenlro at tho last New Zealand amateur athletic championships, Mr. Evonson securing third place in threo championships, and Mr. Fitzgerald wciiring second place in tho mile walk championship. Members of the club had won noarly twenty events at open meetings duringtlie past season.
