UNREST AT CANTON.

CHINESE JDFA OF POETIC JUSTICE. Chinese returning to Australia express much concern for the future of Canton, believing that a serious political upheaval is imminent. So far little has followed the rumours of outbreaks, but an attempt has been made on the life of Admiral Li Chun. When passing to his homo in Canton from the Naval Department a bomb was thrown at the admiral. It exploded under ihis chair, wounding eighteen of his. bodyguard and killing three outright. Tho admiral was wounded slightly, and is out of danger. The assassin was arrested, and he expressed regret that he failed in his attempt'on the admiral. ' Following the explosion, the officer having charge of the admiral's bodyguard was seen by a magistrate robbing another Chinaman, of his watch and money. When latter resisted he was arrested by the officer, and charged with teing a thief, fortunately for the innocent man tho scene was witnessed by the. magistrate, who 'forthwith had the officer arrested, tried, found guilty and beheaded. Tho irony of the situatioi for tho officer was felt when the crowd, seeing him conveyed to the official landing placo for decapitation, considered him to be the Anarchist who had modo the attempt on the admiral's life. The justices had not, at tho timo of the account of the tragedy being closed, demanded • the head of tho Anarchist, who was waiting a moro elaborate trial.
