— J SOCIETIES ASK FOR HELP, The art societies established ill the four cities have renewed their requests for financial aid by the State, in a petition which was presented to tho Houso of Representatives yesterday afternoon by Jlr. T. JI. Wilford (Hutt). 'l'ho signatures attached to the petition aro tlioso of Georgo George, president Auckland Society of Arts; 11. S. Wardell, president New Zealand Academy of Pino Arts, Wellington; William lioece, president of the Canterbury. Society of Arts; and A. Bathgate, president of tlie Public Art Gallery Society of Dunedin. Tho collections 111 tho four galleries, which arc open free to the public, have been acquired by private subscriptions, donations, and bequests, aided by grants by Parliament in 1905 and 1910. Tho societies propose that Parliament should grant a sum for the purchase of additions to the galleries.
