KOHN ROBBERY AND SUSPECTS.
EXTRADITION FROM AMERICA DIFFICULT. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, September 15. Somo surprise was occasioned in Auckland to thoso interested when it waa found that the San Francisco boat, which reached Wellington yesterday, did not bring Detective Scott, and, with him, William and Maud Rogers—the persons arrested in San Francisco in April on. suspicion of having, in March, burglariously entered tho jewellery shop of Mr. A. Kohn and stolen .£BOO worth of jewellery. Previous information had led to the expectation that extradition would"bo granted in sufficient time for the detective to catch tho last boat with his charges, and a private letter, written just before the boat sailed, aiid received in Auckland to-day, shows that, right up to sailing time, Dctectivo Scott had hopes of catching the boat. The letter says:— "Tho law procedure here ia awful. The Rogers couple were ordered back to New Zealand about two weeks back, but they had retained one of the smartest firms of lawyers, and, although ' Scott has nersuaded them to givo up fighting and go back to New Zealand, their lawyer is fighting for the dollars. Tho lawyer has appealed to the Secretary of State, ond that delays things of course. He is trying to wear out tho patience of tho prosecutors, bo that they will say: 'Take tho money and savo mo-re expense.' Detectivo Scott is keeping at the authorities in Washington by wire, and hopes, even yet, to get away by to-morrow's boat with the prisoners, and the jewellery, and Icavo the attorney for the British Consul to fight for the dollars. I am pretty sure that practically all tho jewellery is rafe, though it has got knocked about through the handling which it has received. The commissioner who tried tho caso (and granted the extradition application) is friendly to our side, and may, on his own responsibility, lot Scott tako tho prisoners and jewellery back to-morrow.'
