It fc not to be exj>ectcd that a man enraged in the peaceful occupation of rubber washing should suddenly find himself in danger of hiß life from flying bullots. Such, however, was tlio experience of one of tho rubber washers a(; the Midland Company's works, Birmingham, recently. Tho man was putting a fine parcel of Peruvian ball through the rolls of ono of the preat crackers, or breakersup, when suddenly loud explosions and volumes of smoke came from the rolls-, accompanied by the ping of flying bullets. When tlto explosions had ceased and tho smoke had cleared away it was found that a number of livo cartridges of largo calibre had been embedded in the erudo Peruvian ball, and had been exploded by the crushing rolls. A sourcli through (ho remainder of Hie rubber in the tank resulted in ovor a dozen more being discovered. It is not unusual to find "bfccuil.s," or lumps of crude rubber, loaded with stones, shot, or motel to make up freight, but this is tho first time- in the experience of tho Midland Rubber Company that livo cartridges hnvo been touad embedded ia tb.o raw rubber,
