MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
(Before Mr.-W. G. lilddell, S.Jf.) DRAB SORT OF FRAUD. PLAUSIBLE PERSON MEETS TWO A'EW AUKIVALS. Robert Long, alias Lawrie, was accused of obtaining X'J from Kichard Caldwell and J.osojjli Thomas Caldwell by means of a certain false pretences with intent to dofraud. Long pleaded not guilty. Evidence given by the Caldwells was to tljo effect tnat they recently arrived ill >ieiv Zealand by the steamer Surrey lrom England. They wero miners, and had booked a passage from Wellington to Grcymouth, intending to go to Blackball. , When they were on board the Jlapourika they met Long, who asseverated that ho was a storekeeper at Greymouth, where ho would lind them employment. As it happened, the vessel was not leaving for some little time, and so they accepted Long's invitation to "havo a drink." Long presently went into a hotel, remarking that he was "going to pay a debt."" Tho Caldwells accordingly waited outside. Long subsequently re.turned. and stated. that, ho had been unable to cash tho cheque, and at accused's request (and an understanding that repayment would bo made when Greyiuoutli was reached), J. Caldwell lent Long <&l'and Richard Caldwell-lent him J!5. Long then returned to tho hotel, and was not seen again that day. R. Caldwell went on to Greymouth, and his brother Joseph remained in Wellington. Some days later Joseph Caldwell observed Long in tho street, and when ho (Caldwell) approached him Long ran into a hotel. Caldwell followed and called out to someone to stop Long. •■- Long was accordingly stopped and handed ovor to tho police. ~ . . ...

THIEF AT THE Y.M.C.A. ■ Henry Alfred Marshall, alias Fraser, was charged with that, on September 14, at Wellington, ho did steal a watch and a leather purse; containing about 45., aud some postage stamps (total value, 375.), the property of Lilias Macaulcy.. The accused pleaded guilty. Chief Detective Broberg "stated that Marshall went' to the Y.M.C.A. and asked for a room. Ho was shown the apartments, and -went into the matron's room and took the articles mentioned. ;-Three months' imprisonment was the sentence. . OTHER CASES. James John Rodgers was ordered to ,£ay7s. court costs for leaving a vehicle unuttended. William. Henr.y Benzley, -the driver of a lorry, .was .fined-10s.. for not-complying with tho notice "Stop, look out for llio e VSi"o" when crossing the railway lines at the Bunny Street crossing. A fine of i'l was entered against Win? Lee for employing Wong Quong, a'shop assistant, after 9 p.m. George Johnston was fined £1 for drunkenness. William Joseph Dwano was charged with committing a certain act. Ho was represented by Mr. T. M. Wilford, and elected to be tried by a'jure.' Ho pleaded not guilty, audi was committed to tho Supreme. Court for trial. Bail was allowed.
