N6T€S AMD GOMMENTS.

The Avonekle Jockey Club's meeting oommenoes on Wednesday next. In connection with the Otaki Maori Exciiij: Club's spring mooting oirners are ffiven a finel rcmimlor. t ; iiat acceptanctw i'or tfce first Hay's handicap events and entries for tli« Jkiden Plate clew, at halfpset S'o'clock to-ni','lit -wrth the club's secretary. Mr. 0. J." D'Ath. Tho Waverley-Waiictara B-nchiß Club's meeting is thw yoar to lie held on Labour Day, October 33. An attractive programme h.v! been' drawn up and entries for Hie different events close on September 26 with the secretary, Mr. W. M«c--iarkne.

From the Canterbury Jockey Club we havo received a book programme for tho season 1911-1912.

Now Zealand horses are freely engaged in Sydney this afternoon. Tho principal event at the l'ojohill races is the Guineas, for three-year-olds, seven furlongs, in which Mr. G. 1). Greenwood's Peirene is engaged. Home Rule, Wharekura, Kairoiun, Culprit, Los Angelfs, Genius, Sunburnt, Irritation, Vice-Admiral, Aphaea, and Lady Medallist are engaged iu other races.

W. Lane, tho well-known ex-jockey, who paid a visit to New Zealand about live years ago for health purposes, was present at Goodwood' when Dean Swift won thf! Chesterfield Cup recently. L:mo has completely recovered from the effects of tho drraclfiil accident which befell him at Lingfiehlin September, JWU, and, apropos tho papular success of Roan Swift in tho Chesterfield Cup lie recoiled tho-fact that ho rode the old "Denn" in the jecon<l race ho won—the Ditch Milo Nur"sory at Newmarket in 1003.

■ Ringman filled second place in tho liurdlo race, on each day of tho Ashburton meeting just concluded.

. Although she is very favourably treated, it is not likely that Countermine will be raced at tho OtalJi fixture. 11. Cults is leaving Lyttplton for Wsinsamii by the Mararoa on Friday next, and is bringing Counterfeit, Countermine, and Avarice with him. The trio aro all well, the first-named especially jo, and she should run creditably in- the Wanpmui Guineas. If it were known that Equitas was at her. beet, the Stewards' Handicap win-nar would ."take" largely in tho President's Handicap at Otaki next Saturday. It is, however, to be feared that this is not tho case, and tho owner of the Advance mare is not likely to allow her to carry such a big impost so early in tho season. As Sir Frisco had. to be withdrawn from his Marton engagements on account of a partial break-down in one of his front joints, he is hardly likely to bo a riranor at Otaki next week.

After King Edward's death, says London "Truth." it was predicted that there would be a severe "slump" in house property at Newmarket, and so it has turned out. A large number of residences are in tho market, but there are no signs of any reasonable offers for such property. .The kto Duke of Devonshire's house in .High Street was, offered the other day with a very moderate reserve, but there were practically no biddings, nor has Mr. J. H. Houldsworth's residence changed bands. The attendance of, the sort of people whose presence is most desired at Newmarket has been much smaller during tho test year than in the late King's time, as when he was down for the week every house was occupied, and as largo parties as could be accommodated were entertained in most of them. King Edward's presence really made all the difference at Newmarket, an<l now that ho has gone the place is suffering. Nor is there the prospect of any improvement in affairs. Two wealthy owners training 'at Newmarket aro said" to contemplate retirement from the turf at the end of the season.

The Australian, Prank Wobtton, put up a-record at the recent Goodwood meeting by riding, .eleven of the 27 winners. Ho had four winning mounts on the concluding day. •

Mr. T. Cameron, owner of Te Whetn, would seem to know exactly where to place his Daystar gelding to win. Last season he. proved a very profitable horse to his owner, and one of his victories was the May Hurdle race»at Wanganui. This season he has 'begun well by winnin,? at Dannevirke, a.nd, as tho pair whieli he beat aro not top-notehers, it is difficult to see how he is likely to suffer much .'at the hands of tho weight adjusters. Fortune has, in many' cases, assisted in the . victories, of Tβ- Whetu, who, at times, is of a very spur disposition, and appears to-race at his test only when in the van. ■

An owner who does not win out of his turn is the Taranaki ex-horseman, P. Johnson. On this account the snecess of Pleiades at Dnnnevirke Was all the more popular. The Daystar gelding did not strip well. In fact, ho looked lighter than was the case a.t : Trentham, .where he fed very badly,, and. to this, his; poor showing.was attrjb,u.fc&,in.,.tne Wellington, Steeplechase. , llhev/ ■Mysrarh'.'.ge'Ming may tura ont to "he one of our best 'chasers next season.

In the latest quotations, Lady Medallist occupies tho ; position of second favonrito in the Epsom Handicap, three points behind BUiirpour. The New Zealand mara is eqna! favourite in the Caulfield Cup with Sunbath For the Derbies nothing is inquired for, but Jacaiuar and, if he keeps' right, Poseidon's brother will start one of the warmest favourites in tho history of the races named.

The racing public shows no inclination to debate any sporting questions at the present time, and very little interest was taken in the Ashburton meeting, whicli concluded yesterday. The appearance of the Otalcr acceptances on Monday morning will furnish food for discussion, as ™ the Wanganui.weights, which are published this morning. While schooling at Ellerslie oh Wednesday last, Regain fell heavily at one of the jumps, and his rider, J. Pinker, received a severe shaking, and was out about the face. • Welcome News was shipped to Sydney from Auckland on Monday last. Mr. F. Leslie is now the owner of the horse named. > ' Weights for the first day's hack events at the Wanganui Jeckey Club's Hieetk" will, be declared on Friday next.
