PROVINCIAL CENTRES.

(From Our Special Correspondents.)

FEATHERSTON. A fancy dross ball for children is to lie held here this month. Proceeds will be in aid of.the swimming baths fund. At the last meeting of the Foatherston Town Board a letter was received from tho Wairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board in reforenco to tho _ largo amount dispensed for casual relief to "travellers." Orders for meals and a night's lodging are giveii by tho police, after inquiries are made, and, as Foatherston is tho iirst stopping-place after the Rimutaka, these ore laTgely availed of. Tho opinion of the meeting was that the practice liad gone beyond reasonable limits, and was rather abused. It was resolved that no orders for accommodation would bo issued after the end of September, provided that the Charitablo Aid Board approved of tho alteration. A match between the Foatherston and Greytown Golf Clubs will take placo here on Saturday. - The local team is: G. Fenwick, .Toogood, Bladen, Speedy, Card, Macdohald, Bicknell, Everton, Benton, and Wilson. FEILDING. A bulb show is being held in tho Parish Hall under the auspices of the Anglican Ladies' Guild. Owing to tho dry spring thero was not a very large exhibit of flowers, and most of those in tho competition showed tho want of bloom and freshness which was inevitable with the I lack of moisture. Cut flowers included a goodly assortment of narcissi, daffodils, anemones, violets, primroses, pansics, camellias, etc. The collection ot primroses and cowslips was extremely effective. Mr. W. E. Weightman, who judged tho cut flowers and pot plants, stated afterwards that ho was much impressed with the display of bulbs. ■ i OTAKI. A somewnat'exciting bolt occurred hero yesterd'av/afternoon when a horse owned by Mr.'li. H. Vann, pluniber, bolted with a trap from the Convent Grounds. On emerging through tho gate-way the vehicle struck a post, and the seat was thrown out. This apparently caused the animal to renew its career at a great pace. After traversing some, distance it took to the road-side but, in passing between a telegraph post and the fence, the vehicle bocame caught, this causing tho harness to break and sotting the horse free. Tho trap, however, was not much damaged, tho main injury being to tho harness.
