KELBURNE-KARORI TRAMWAY.
. CONSTRUCTION URGED. A deputation consisting of about 30 Karori ratepayers waited upon the Karori Borough Council last evening to urge the desirability of. making some effort whereby tho present service to Karori might be improved, and a shorter route adopted. Mr. J. W. Henderson, speaking on behalf of the deputation, stated that residents of Karori had felt that it was time that the present tramway sorvice to Karori should bo improved, and a less circuitous route adopted. Kavori was one of the best residential suburbs in the city, but on account of the present tramway service they were placed at a disadvantage. Residents of Island Bay, ILataitai, and other suburbs could get to their homes moro cheaply and quickly than Karori people. He therefore hoped that tho council would give tho matter favourable consideration. If a new tramway lino were constructed from tho terminus of the cable car at Kclburno it would 1m much shorter and moro convenient. Perhaps i L , would be possible to do away with overhead by substituting the new typo of accumulator car. If tins could be done it would materially reduce tho cost of the work. This, however, was a matter for engineers to decide.
Mr. E. Hammond, another member of tlio deputation, supported the remarks of the previous speaker. It was estimated that the Kelburne proposal would cost about .£IO,OOO, aud the iuterest on this sum would amount to about .£6OO per annum. Tho Kelburnc-Karori Tramway Company had offered to contribute .£3OO a year if tho proposal were adopted, and the othei oC3OO would bo saved in mileage. In rcplyi m to the deputation, tho Mayor (Mr. Cathie) thanked thoso present "for tho interest which they were taking in borough affairs. It was a very good sign. The'council had sot up a special committee some time ago to go into the matter, and the city engineer had also been instructed to prepare a report and estimate. The City Council's staff had been very busy lately, aud this fact, combined with Mr. Wilf'ord's illness, had tended to delay tho work. Of courso thoy should remember that some time ago a deputation had waited on the council and expressed themselves as being against the proposals voice! by tho present deputation. Ho could assure them, howavor, that no surprise would l)e sprung on them. Tho question would be decided by a poll. They could not, however, do much until, they knew tho minds of tho City Council authorities. Before tho deputation withdrew Councillor Hildreth mentioned that the special committee set up by tho Karon Council would submit its report at next meeting.
