Tho committee of tho AVairarapa and East Coast Pastoral and Agricultural Society, which has discussed tho question of educating the amateur judge of stock to become efficient and capable of acting iu that capacity at tho association's shows, have appointed a sub-committee to discuss tho question on i'riday next. The secretary of tho association (Mr. H. S. Moss) I has written to various well-known judges and exhibitors for their opinion on allowing o:ie man to go through tho various classes of any section with them, and somo of the replies aro stated to be decidedly interesting. Of tho 38 German owls imported by the Hawke's Hay Fruitgrowers' Association to destroy small birds, ono has sinco died and three or four have escaped from their cages before tho expiration of the acclimatisation period. A Hastings writer says sparrows have, been introduced into the owl cages, and short work was made of them, whilst a. ininah put up a very little better light against these feathered i ferocities. It is not denied that the owls ! will probably levy a toll on the native birds, but, on tho other hand, it is contended that the industries and prosperity of an entiro district cannot be allowed to sutler for mere sentiment. It is also pointed out that there aro very few native birds in these parts, and that tho , number of owls released is small.
