AUSTRALIA'S NAVY.
Admiral AV. H. Henderson mado somo interesting remarks regarding naval det'onco whou interviewed at Morce. Under the present conditions, ho said, the only way in which Australia could contribute a proportionate sharo to Imperial detenca was by having a navy of her own. At present thcro was no imperial Council or Imperial Parliament, and no machinery of'any sort by which the oversea Dominions could bo represented, and have a say in tho disbursement of the contribution. Australia was spending two millions a yoar on a navy. She could not give that amount as a contribution to tho upkeep of the. Imperial navy, and havo the same control over the disbursement. In tho caso of war the squadrons would havo to bo left in Eastern waters to-defend commerce. _ Unless Australia had her own navy Britain would have to maintain one here as formerly. Having her own fleet would cost Australia more, "but in return sho would possess se.veral advantages. She would have control in time of peace, would be training her own men in defending their own waters, and relieving tho British taxpayers of a burden which tho Australians and not tho British should bear.
