IT is Excellency the Governor is to pay a visit (o tho Boys' Institute, Arthur Street, this evening. Mr. T. >r. Wilford, M.P., Mayor of Wellington, resumed his civic duties yesterday after a fortnight's holiday in the south to recuperate liis health after his recent illness. Chief Detective Broberg is at present on holiday leave. Detectivo M'llveney is in charge of tho detective oflico at Lambton Quay. Some months ago a movenent was started to present Dr. Carr, tlo Roman Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne, oil tho occasion of his silver jubilc. as archbishop, with a substantial testimonial of tho affcction entertained for him by the clergy and laity, but Dr. Jarr declined to accept any form of testimonial of a pecuniary character. Tiicro were three proposals as to the form which the testimonial should take, one being the completion of the frontal towers of St. Patrick's Cathedral, at an estimated cost of <C 15,000, another the establishment of a fund in the interests of Roman Catholic primary education, and the third the erection of a Roman Catholic college in connection with the Melbourne University, for which a site has been reserved. The event occurs 011 September 29, corresponding with the same date in 1886 on ■which the papal brief by which tlio Archbishop was transferred from tho see of Galwoy to tho archiepisoopal see of Melbourne was then' issued. Arrangements are now being made to commemorate tho event on Sunday, October 1, when pontifical High Mass will be celebrated ill the cathedral. In the evening of the same day addresses will .be presented to tho Archbishop by tlio Bishops of the province, the priests of the archdiocese and the laity.
