NOTES AND COMMENTS

[By Glf.ncor.]

The Dannevirko Racing Club's meeting takes placo on Wednesday next. From Southland is reported tho death of Glenoglo (Clanranald—Retina), siro of Glensprmg. There will he racing at Ashburton on Thursday and Friday next. No North Island horses have been entered at the Dnnedin Jockey Club's Spring meeting. The Ashburton County . Racing Club's Spring meeting will be Held on Thursday and Friday next. There are no North Island horses engaged at the meeting, but several of the most prominent northern horsemen have gone south to assist at tho fixture. These includo S. Eeid, It. Hatch, and C. Emerson. Tho proposed trip to Sydney with North East and St. (jato has been abandoned owing to tho first-mentioned horso showing signs of weakness in one of his front joints, after doing slow work on Tuesday last. His owner was. of the opinion that ho would only bo risking a break-down to gallop him, so he has been blistered and turned out. The victory of Los Angeles in the Chelmsford Stakes, nine furlongs, at the Tattersall's Club meeting on Saturday last will servo to bring the flying chestnut into the market for the big handicaps to be decided at Randwick at the end of tho present month. Tho opposition he encountered, and tho smart timo put up, proves that O'Dounell's gelding is probably better now than ever he was, and his owner did the right thing in sending him to Australia to race. His success on Saturday was fully anticipated, both hero and in Christchurch. Thero is evidently to bo no lack of 'juveniles racing this season for the Wanganui Jockey Club has received ,a total nomination of eighty-six two-year-plds for the Guineas, to bo run next year. Tho list contains the names of all the principal owners in tho Dominion. All the principal horses that were nominated have been paid up for in the Dannevirko Steeples, to bo run on Wednesday, and at tho present time the race wears a (Very open appearance. As Sir Lethe has 12st. 51b. on his back, it is quito likely that an attempt will bo made to hold him in behind. It certainly seems a prohibitive weight to go to the front with, but still the Lctlic gelding has always failed badly when wrestled with in behind his field. Here, then, is a. nice problem for the owner of tho horse to grapple with. AVirral was making a great noiso at the end of his race at Marton on Thursday, so over a three-mile course ho may bo counted out. He and Lovell may run to tho front and beat each other, and so clear the way for good stayers like Pleiades and AViniata. Another horso whose chances must not bo too lightly assessed is the Auckland horso Connecticut, who showed winning form at Marton. Providing ho can get the thrco miles he should take all sorts of beating, but it is noticeable that he is also engaged in tho Maiden Steeples, in which a wretchedly weak field is opposed to him. The running-off of Oxton in tho Second Hack Hurdle's at Marton was a great surprise to his new owner, as tho Birkenhead gelding has never shown a disliko to his fences when racing previously. The going at Marton was on tho hard side, and this may account for the animal running off, as he would probably bo feeling a bit sore in his front joints, which do'not look to.be over-strong. An amusing incident occurred at Goodwood (England) recently, when tho market opened on tho selling race. An amateur bookmaker, in a hurry to be first, shouted "Five to 2 tho field." Ho was carried off his feet by peoplo anxious to lake advantage of his generosity, and his clerk fled in. dismay before tho sudden onslaught. As tho popular pick eventually started at 15 to 8 "on, in a field of seven, and won, it is not surprising that backers were anxious, to support him at 5 to 2 against. ,T Flvnn, tho West Australian lightweight, 'hail his first mount in England at Hurst Park on July 20, when ho rode Januctta in the Vyner Handicap. I'lynn, who can go to scalo at Gst, ,Ib., subsenuontlv rodo a winner for Mr. K. S. Sievier, at Alexandra Park, and has since been retained by tho proprietor of the "Winning Post"'to do his riding for the season 1012. _ Particulars of tho Dannevirko Racing Club's 'steeplechase meeting, to be held to-morrow, are advertised elsewhere in this issue.
