CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT. INTERESTING PLAY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Wanganui, September 7. The golf championship was continued this morning on tho Wnngamii Club's links in ideal golfing weather, ami with a very largo attendance. Great interest was taken in the play, largo numbers following the more prominent, players in their rounds. Tho results of the day's play wero as follow— PROFESSIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. Second Eound. J. A. Clements beat D. M'Cormick, 2 up and 1 to play. Clements easily outclassed his opponent, although the scores only show 2 up ami 1 to play, M'Cormick never being really in it. J. Watt beat W. B. Simpson, 2 up and 1 to play. This game was very close, some really excellent play being- seen, several present considering tho match one of the best of the day. Both men played sterling golf. F. G. Hood beat G. Hood, 2 up and 1 to play. The driving of F. Hood was very bad, but his patting was brilliant. G. Hood was excellent, both off tho teo and through tho game, but his putting was faulty. . This was a very good game. W. MTJwen beat H. Stewart, i up and 2 to play. Considerable interest attached to this "match, particularly as tho local player, who had hitherto been oft' colour, was showing better form. Both men played splendidly, but M'Ewen was tho more consistent. AMATEUR. CHAMPIONSHIP. Second Round. A. Duncan beat J. Forbes, 3 up and 1 to play. Kapi Tarehn beat B. L. Taylor, i up and 3 to play. A. L. B. Kidstnn beat C. W. Eattray, 2 up and 1 to play. Kuropo Tareha beat K. Duncan, 6 up and 5 to play. J. C. Burns beat H. E. Wright, 2 up and 1 to play. H. B. Lusk beat A. H. Lewis, 1 up at the nineteenth hole. G. N. Dodgshun beat H. M. Butterwoth, 2 up and 1 to play. C. St. G. Goro beat E. H. Balneavis, 2 up and 1 to play. • All the games in this round wero excellent, tho golf being of a very high standard. A. Duncan and J. Forbes had a good round, but tho open champion was too good. Kapi Tareha, who is playing brilliantly, and is at the very top of his game, easily disposed of B. I;."Taylor. Kuropo Tareha is also playing well, and played an excellent round with K. Duncan. Dodgshun, who has been playing splendidly, effected n surprise by beating Butterworth,. but tho victory was well deserved.
Ono of the best rounds played in the Amateur Championship contest eventuated this morning when A. H. Lewis and H. B. Lusk (present amateur champion) met. Lewis took the first thrro holes, taking a very pretty four at the second. The fourth was "ha.lved, Lewis missing a short putt. Lusk won the fifth and sixth. .At the seventh a very fino brassio shot on to the green by Lewis enabled him to get a half. The eighth was halved, and Lusk won tho ninth in four. They were thus all square at tho turn. The tenth (Long Tom) was haired in six. and the next in three each. In tho twelfth Lewis put his second into tho rushes, and Lusk won in four, th.s putting him one up. The thirteenth and fourteenth were halved, but Lewis won the fifteenth, thus making them all square. The sixteenth was halved. A very pretty three by Lusk at the seventeenth put him in front again, and ho halved the last, thus winning a most interesting game by 1 up. The afternoon was devoted to the foursome bogey, which was won by Trolovo and Forbes, five up. Tho best of the other cards handed in were: Fisher and Seyup; ..Lusk, and Nicoll, 2 up; But'tcrwortfc and Godhy, 1 up; Kidstone and Balnea vis, 1 up; Taylor and Bartlett, 1 down; Meldrum and Goss, 1 down; Gordon and Pharazyn, 2 down; Scifert and Traill, 2 down; Hales and K. Duncan, 2 down; Lewis and Ritchie, :.• down. Tha Bogey Handicap resulted: Kapi Tareha, i up; A. 11. Nicoll (10), 2 up; C. St. G. Goro (4), 1 up: G. Saunders (scr.), all fquaro; J. Foibes (scr.), all square. The semi-finals of the professional championship will be played at !) o'clock this morning, when Clements will meet Watt and F. Hood will meet M'Ewon.
