FEILDING, Messrs. S. Strawbridgc, of Waihina, ami B. Gower, of Rewn. have-sold their farms, tho former to Mr. A. K rearce, and tho latter to Mr. Davis. Mr. W. M'Dougall, who recently sold his properly at 'fapuao, has pnruhased a farm at Tuakau, near Auckland, where ho intends shortly to taue up residence. i-.Tr Thanks to tlio efforts of Mr. D. 11. Guthrie, M.P., it is understood that the Education Department has decided to issue railway tickets (in connection witn tho Marton .Tunction experiment garden plot.-) to pupils of District Uifjh Schools. Tho Fcilding-Rongotea Primitive Mcthodst Circuit held their quarterly meeting in Eeilding this week. The Rev. J. Sharp was in tho chair. the reports from most parts of the circuit were considered very encouraging, the Ucv. J. Shorn received and accepted a unanimous invitation to act as superintendent lor a third year, and the Rev. A. 11. I'owles obtained leave of absence for a low weeks on account of ill-liKilth. the Rev. J. Sharp and Mr.-J. C. Thompson wore appointed delegates to tho mooting or tho District Svnod, which is to bo held on tho West Coast in October.
OTAKI. The monthly sitting of the Road Board held on Monday afternoon, was attended by Wardens Jones (chairman), Skerinan. Judcl, D'Ath, Noes, Howe 1, and Best. It was decided to wa.it on the Minister fm Railways and endeavour to secure a publie crossing at the end of Jubilee Road. It was resolved to invite applications foi tho position of surfaceman and working foreman at Ss. Gd. and 9s. per day respectively and for the position of cleik and treasurer. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives and friends of the late Mr. H. F. Eagar (clerk). Otaki continues to progress, and new buildings are going up in. ™ r >° us fn d ' r « c : tion«. Mr. G. Noble now intends to h.i\o a hairdresser's.saicon and billiard saloon erected in the business part of tl>*:<o»n. This and other new buildings will keep carpenters busy for some time. Among the buyers at this weeks sale of tho Gear Estate were several from W anarapa, Palmerston North, 1 eliding, liugton, and Masterton, and Mr. A. lv. Perston. of Australia (formerly secretary of the Wairarapa Agricultural and Pastoral Association). Another Wairarapa buyer was Mr. 11. Hodge, well-known m sporting circles. . Th" Daiiy Union Company anticipate .. big season,' and have accepted the offer of a Homo firm for a large portion ot the season's output. At present they are offering Is. Old. for home separated cream. „ , , A "social" was held on Wednesday evening in connection with the Otnki Druids' Lodge, the hall Iwmg crowded. Euchre and dancing were the features. Fruit trees in the district arc nowwell advanced, and many have been in flower for some time. Providing there are no hcavv winds, the season should be a good one. Orange and lemon trees continue to bear well. Mr.' Henry Burling, the _ well-known ccntemrir-n, continues to improve m health, and has apparently made almost a complete, recovery from a recent attack of bronchitis.
FEATHERSTON. The Feathcrston Golf , Club will play a return match against the Carlerton Club on Saturclav next at' Carterton. The proposal that, the rating in the Featbersion county be on the bap cf the unimproved value will bo decided at a poll of the ratepayers on September 15. A keen contest is anticipated. Pharnzyn) remaining after the sale of the homestead to Mr. E-. liiddiford, and consisting of some 700 acres of good dairying 'land, was purchased by Mr. AY. Barton for closer settlement purposes. Tho land has been divided into eight farms, ranging in area from 75 to 100 acres, and t.ll of these Lav© noiv been sold. Possession will be given to the new owner* at the end of October, and it-is anticipated that the- subdivision iviJl- -materially-• increase .'the. output of dairy produce from this locality;
LEVIN. At the Wereroa Town Hall yesloTdjy Mr. A. Straw-bridge was presented with -a handsome set of pipes and.Mrs. Strawbridge with a handsome silver teapot nad hot water jug, tho. presentation 'being made on tho occasion of their leaving the district. Tho Mayor of Levin made the presentation in the presence of a large gathering.
GREYTOWN. The monthly meeting of the Greytown Borough Council took place on Monday eveuiu?. A letter was received from the general officer commauding the New Zealand forces asking permission to use the public hall for instructional purposes. Tho application was granted, subject to certain 'The'State;Guarantee Office wrote regarding a-further advance of £'M ou the gas loan account. Mr. J. C. Boddington, Mastorton, asked for a return of railway deviation petitions, etc. The clerk was instructed to return same. The "Wairarnpn Hospital'and Charitable Aid Board wrote, confirming the appointment of Mr. .Miller as sanitary inspector. Messrs. Coward and Co., London, wrote in regard to gas sundries.—Ueforrcd to gas manager. The Works Cammittco reported having laid the concrete culvert in Main Street. They recommend issuing a notice that horse and vehicle traffic' be prohibited over the Papawai Bridge.—Adopted. Tho Finance Committee's report showed receipts for (ho month as .£l3l and accounts to pay off ,£ll7 (general), and ,£321 (gas accounts). It was decided to obtain an estimate of the cost of making concrete kerbing to footpaths (three in Hastwell Street). Tho Jlavor stated that it would be necessary to dispense with the services df-lhe present lamplighter, as gas would be available during the course- of the present month. The suggestion was agreed to.
