Tho Masterton Employers' Association has now a membership ol' about one hundred. As shoving tho animation in building' trades in Masterton just now, it may bo mentioned that during the five months ending August 31 building permits to the value of ,£13,&11 have been issued ia Mustertou. This is about .£3001) in excess of the value of the permits granted during tho whole of the year 1910-11. At a special meeting of the Borough Council this week, representatives of tho County Council were present by invitation, and tho position in regard to tho new Waipoua bridge was discussed. The engineer to the County Council made a piopo=al to meet the new situation, but this did not receive tho approval of tho Borough Council,, and it was decided to writs to the County Council suggesting the suspension of work upon the bridge until tho matter had been settled, 'ihe Borough Kngiiieer, in the meantime, is to prepare au estimate of the cost of removing tho bridge, and of widening it to the full breadth of Queen Street. A number of horses in the Masterton district have been > suffering of late from an aculo form of inlluenza. The ordinary meeting of tho Mastertnn Lodge of Oddi'cllows was held last night. Uro. M'l.eod, who is leaving the district, tendered his resignation as N.G., and Bro. J. Winskill was appointed to till tho position. Uro. Winsliill was subsequently installed to tho oilice by Uro. U. Kraliagen, I'.G.M. Several of the brethren took tho second degree, and two new members were proposed for admittance to the lw'go. ■Several deer have been s:cn of l;-ie ia fields at the foot of tho ranges to the west of Masterton. ~ Tho Masterton Parliamentary Debatim? Society concluded its session with an adjourned debate on "Socialism," initiated bv Mr. 11. C. Kobinson. The society is now fairly strong in numbers, and has ; provided a very healthy form of recreation during the winter months. The intimation of tho resignation of Mr. Fowlds from the Ministry caused rather a sensation in Masterton. Tho subject was almost tho sole topic of conversation among settlers to-day. The Education Board has been advised that the request for a grant for tho building of an assembly hall at the Mas--1 terton District High School cannot bo granted. The Department's opinion is that it would be preferable to build au infants' school detached from tho exist- , ing buildings. Another old settler passed away yesterday—Mrs. Edward Braggins. A scheme for the linking up of the various Ministers' Associations of the Dominion was discussed, and n committee was formed to further the scheme, it being felt thai, if the various associations and councils were in touch with each other, combined effort in any direction might the more easily bo accomplished. A proposal was made to hold a Sunday school demonstration on sonic Sunday in October, if such could be arranged. Another movement is being made in the direction of establishing an competition in the Wairarapa. It is thought that such a competition would be supported by breeders in all parte of tho North Island.
