POWELKA.
A SEARCH IN THE BACK-BLOCKS. (By Telegraph— Press Association.) Auckland, September 6. Earlj- on Tuesday morning n party of four police arrived at To Kuiti, and, accompanied by Constable Matthew, loft immediately for the back-blocks, in the direction of Mokau. A further party of police arrived yesterday afternoon by* express from Auckland, and also left at once in that direction. Many rumours aro current in regard' to the mission of tho police. The general opinion is that the search is for Poweika. It is held that it is possible that he hit out across the Maiinwatu country, in tho direction of Mokau, with the hopo of getting away on a timber scow, or one of the colliera engaged in the coal trade. It is stated that Poweika had been seen'a few days ago crossing Mount Messenger iu tho direction of Mokau, and this is supposed to be tho information that the police aro working on. Advice from Awakino stales that the police interviewed n man who boro a great likeness to Poweika. It is understood he was tho man scon crossing Mount Messenger.
