GOVERNOR-GENERAL'S SPEECH. TARIFF REVISION. RECIPROCITY WITH NEW ZEALAND. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Rec. September 5, 9.15 p.m.) Melbourne, September 5. Tho Federal Parliament was,opeued today by tho Governor-General, Lord Denman. Tho Govcrnor-lienoral's Speecli congratulated members on the continued general prosperity of Iho Commonwealth. The importance of tho work of tho Imperial Conference to the Dominions was referred to, as was also the steady progress of the construction of the Australian Navy, and tho patriotic responso of the youths under the universal training scheme. It is proposed to-revise tho tariff with a view to getting rid of anomalies. The programme for tho session includes a Commonwealth Bank Bill, a Trans-Con-tinental Railway Bill, a Seamen's Compensation Bill,,and n Navigation Bill. Measures will also bo introduced to codify tho criminal law, and to amend the Electoral, Old Age Pensions, and Industrial'and Arbitration Acts. It is stated that the progressive land tax is encouraging settlement and attracting desirablo immigrants.
