THE GOLF HONOURS.
* AT WANGANUI. POSITIONS FOB FEBST DAY. (By TdceraDH.-SDccial CorrosDondonU Wanganui, September 4. Tho Now Zealand golf championships opened this morning on tho Wanganui Golf Club's Hales at Bolmoiir, ill excellentgolfing weather. The forenoon was rather dull, but there was a good light, while tho afternoon conditions wore almost perfect. Tho course was in capital order, and pleased the visitors, affording, as it did, «v»ry opportunity for good golf without being too easy. The morning was occupied by tho first round of the Open Championship, in which 08 players wont round. Only three players got into those-, envies, and of theso tho present open champion (A. , Duncan) put in the best card with 77. Ho began indifferently, but presently steadied down, and then put in somo fino play. Stewart, of Gislxirne, played excellently ill the first half, getting 35,, but it then took him 13 to oomo home—a total of 78. His partner, Kapi, played very consistently, putting np 38 and 40. Tina pair exhibited tho most consistent golf of tho morning. lvureno Tarehn, tho prostnt amateur champion, was quito off his game, his total of 91 being matlo up of 45 and 40. J. Goss, jun., a young Wanganui player, finished with two croditahk "forty-0ii05. ,5 Playing "out," Duncan squared with bogey with 38, and on the "in" journey mado 39 (or three up) on the "colonel." ■ Of the professionals, F. Hood, of Auckland, had hard luck at tho "quarries," which cost him nine strokes. But for this J'.is score- of S3 should liavu been woll in the seventies. He had especially bad fortuno going "out," taking 43 hits in tho journey. Clements (Christclnirch), «x-opcn champion made 39 and 42, his total of 81 being thrco better than that of M'Ewan (Uaiiirumii professional), wlioso 84 comprised 41 and 43. Tho feature of the ereond round in the afternoon was tho battle between Duncan and Hood, who paired together. Tho Auckland professional had evidently made up his mind to wipe out his deficit of the morning. Ploying , brilliantly, ho went "out' in 30, as against Duncan's 41, and thus, up to this point, had recovered five. Coming "in," Duncan recovered slightly, and finished 4,0, to Hood's 41. Hood's total was 7", and Duncan's 81, and, in spite of his ilMuck in the morning, the Aucklander is now- to be curiously reckoned with. Stewart, of Gisborne, is also already tipped us the man who will be thereabouts at the finish. Ho started sensationally in tho second round, but lost ground at tho 7th hole. Nevertheless, lie finished out in 39, and came liotno in 41, being square with bogey (80) on tho round. Ho is thus oven with Duncan on tho aggregate; Clements played good, consistent golf, as also did Goss. The two Tarohas played disappointingly, and both will need to make good recoveries if they aro to bo in the first flight at tho finish. Forbes, of Timaru, played sound golf, and is lying handy in the aggregate, HOW THE CAKES EEAD. (By Tokcraph.-I'rcss Association.) Wanganui, September 4.
