THE WEATHER.
FORECAST AND SUMMARY. Present indications are for moderate to strong easterly winds, northward of Hokitika, and Kaikoura, and northerly and westerly breezes elsewhere. The barometer has a falling tendency, and liasy and unsettled conditions are to be expected at times in most parts of the country. Northerly and westerly winds have prevailed, and trale3 in Foveaux Strait on Saturday and Sunday, but the winds are more variable, and moderated to-day. Considerable rain has fallen on the West Coast of the South Island, and fair to cloudy weather, with warmer conditions, have prevailed generally. D. 0. BATES. Meteorological. Foilding, September 4.—Showery with sunshine; clear frosty night. l'almerston, September 4.—Very threatening; rain fell for a few minutes, but cleared off. A good downpour is much needed. Otaki, September 4.—Fine, but inclined to be dull at intervals. Carterton, September 4—The weather ' here to-day wi\s fine, but the slty was overcast, and there are indications .for rain. Featherston, September 4—Fine, but dull. Sunday was fine, with strong N.\V. wind. Greytown, September 4.—lt has been quite Bpririg weather for the past ten days. Sunday was quite clear and bright. To-day, however, is cloudy, and the apparent outlook is rain.
