September 3, 5.5 p.m.) Sydney, September 3. Lady Medallist remains in the Epsom Handicap. The mistake arose through the Sydney pollers confusing her with Lady Jledalet, who was withdrawn. ! Time, lmin. 55!;ec. SILVER BULLET WINS. Tho New Zealander, Soultiform, 'ran second to Baldoyle in tho Doona Trial. Another New Zealander, Silver Bullet (by Calibre), captured the Warriston Welter, seven furlongs, beating Idealist by a head in lmin. 3!sec. NOTES AND COMMENTS. {By Glf.kcoe.l Amongst the. winners at the North T-ara-naki Hunt Club meeting 011 Thursday last was the New Zealand Cup winner, Star Rose, who won the Hunters' Hurdles, one mile and' a. half. At the same meeting. Te Whararoa, a member of A. Rhodos's team, won the Hack Handicap, six furlongs, defeating Monsieur Soult and three others. Whatashot and St. Wood, two Auck-land-trained horses, are to compete at the Jfa.rt.oll meeting. Tho former is in the •Maiden Steeplechase, and the latter in the Hack Hurdles. Several New Zealand Cup acceptors— Iranui, Shuja, Fort William, and Projectile—have been nominated at Otaki. Acceptances for the Dannevirke Racing Club's meeting clcso 011 Friday next. It is stated that the Wairarapa sportsnian, Mr. R. Bnick, owner of Zealand, is disappointed with the gelding's showing in Melbourne, and he is returning home shortly. Tho Porirua team for the Marton meeting goes north to-day. Ono of the inmates of this stable—Ribstone Pippin, who recently broke down badly—will accompany the loam as far as Levin, where lie'is to be turned out. Penza galloped six furlongs at the Hult at tho end of last week, and pulled up sound. Her trainer, is of opinion that she will stand a preparation, and she may yet repay her owner for her failures last season. • The chestnut mare is a long-striding animal, and seems best suited on a course with a long straight. J. Delaney, who was badlv hurt in the opening event of the recent C.J.C. nieetina, is now rjnitr? himself again, and will be riding at the Marton meeting. He leaves for Sydney 011 Friday next. Another horseman, who has made a.good recovery from his recent indisposition, is O. Jenkins, and lie. 100, will be in the saddle at Jlarton on Wednesday and Thursday next. Boris (Stepniak—Shepherdess), who has done three seasons at the stud in tho Wairnrapa, has-now been leased, by Jlr. Lan Duncan, of the Waikanae stud, ai.rr takes up his new post at once. Several of the stock of this young sire are being trained in the Wairnrapa district, and some of them aro highly spoken of. H. Gray, when riding at Rosehill recently, had a rather curious experience. Having been engaged by the owner of Flavigny, he duly presented himself, but tho lraiu&r ; refused ■ to> nut hiiu up. Tho owner, however, was insistent, and Gray went out to do his preliminary, but before this could bo accomplished, the clerk of the course galloped after him, and brought him back to the paddock, where, 011 examination, it was found that tho girths were cut, and were hanging by a thread only, so that, when the horse jumped out of tho barrier, lie would burst through them. Naturally there lyas n great hubbub'over the affair. A Sydney cable recently announced that tho well-known Raudwick trainer, "Len" Want, had been disqualified for five years for tampering with a girth, so, presumably, this is the' case referred to. An Auckland paper states that C. Brown will this season rido for "Ike" Foulsbnm in Melbourne." Flaith, who defeated Comedy King in the Meinsie Stakes at Caulfieid on 'Saturday, .is a three-year-old colt that cost Ms o>vner 600 guineas as a yearling. Three weeks ago. he won the Malakoff Stakes at Flemington, when obviously backward in condition. His onlv win as a two-year-old was in a Jlairien Plato at Jlooiiec Valley, but he ran second to Sconser in the Ascot Vale Stakes, and second to Gillamatong in the Select Stakes at Flemington. Ho is a stable companion of Gillamatong, and is trained by Hickenbotham, whoso horses are generally well forward in ■ conditisn * when started. Ho was not as good as Gillamatong as a •two-year-old, but there is no certainty he will not beat him as a three-year-old. He is engaged in the A.J.C. Derby, Caulfieid Guineas, Cauifield Cup, V.R.C. Derby, and Melbourne Cup. What is said to havo'bom a well-organ-ised plan to. back Gunboat for tho New Zealand Cup was rumoured on Friday last, but it is stated that verv little money was secured about the "Calibre 'gelding. It. seems as if tho Ring in New Zealand is slowly but surely being blotted 6ut. Mr. L. V. Russell, of Inglewood, rode three winners at the North Taranaki Hunt Club's meeting last week. A couple of good-looking two-year-olds were given a run on the Now Plymouth course proper 011 Thursday. They were the Merriwee gelding, Paoli, and Jiangaoraka,,a hnlf-brothnr to Jlnnjapdto, both out of A. Rliodes's stable." Hydraulic acted as companion to them. At tho annual meeting of members of the Dannevirke Racing Club, held last week, complimentary reference was made to the manner in wbicli the secretary (Mr. J. S. Freeman) had carried out his duties during the year. The following officers were elected:—President, Mr. G. Hunter (unopposed); vice-presidents, Messrs. James Armstrong and W. G. Hunter. There were five nominations for three vacancies in the committee, and Messrs. R. E. Bunny. J. A. Riddell, and R. Roake were elected. _ Pacwao was re-elected' unopposed as Native repreienta'ivo on the committee. Jlr. W. J. StraHoa, secretary of tlie Hawke's Bay Jockey Club, lias been granted six months' leave of absence, to commence after the Jlay meeting. He intends taking a trip to England. The well-known cross-countvy horseman A. Cowan bad an unpleasant, experience at Ellerslie racecourse last week (says the Auckland "Herald" on Friday last). He was schooling tho hunter Ilautiri over Ihe double jump in front of tho sta.'id, and at tho first fence the liorse jumped very high, unseating. Cowan, who was thrown against the second fence of the double, but ho fortunately escaped without serious i.njyry. Later 011 Cowan was riding Dawn over the hurdles, but. at. tho second obstacle (hat horse fell heavily, and for some minutes Cowan was unable to move.' He afterwards walked away, much shaken and bruised.
